Rreliance Water Jugs

I bought 4 of the blue collapsible reliance water jugs a while back. All 4 developed leaks at the fold points. Reliance wanted them shipped back to Canada at my expense. Not spending that. So they looked at pix and capitulated, sending me 4 new ones. We didn't need them right away so they went in storage. Pulled them out recently and all 4 developed leaks immediately at the creases where they fold up. DEFINITELY not punctures.

So reliance insists I ship them back to exchange for the translucent ones...at my expense.

Am I the only one with such bad performance from the blue collapsible reliance jugs?

No. I bought a couple of them a few years back and they leaked as well.

Re: reliance water jugs

My Reliance folding jugs last about a year before they develop small leaks in the folded corners. They are still good for carrying water, but not for storing it for any length of time. I circle the leaks with a marker so that I can set them down leak up if I need to leave them for any length of time.

I use them for making painkillers in bulk - definitely good for that!

I have not had luck with them either.... Slow learner here I kept buying them for years.... I finally gave up.

One alternative that works is the 5l wine bladders from box vino. If you can stomach Franzia they have great bladders. I also use the 3l bladders as ballast for my training pack to keep my legs in shape for hiking.

Re: reliance water jugs

I have had mixed success with the Reliance jugs over the years. In time they all develop leaks, some take years, some days. Not a good product IMO. I have had better luck with Coleman jugs, though. Much heavier walls, built in handle, no leaks. But the opening is too small for some hoses to fit in and the cap and spout don't work so well.

Life is hard...

Cheers,

Jim

Re: reliance water jugs

My diesel, water, and gasoline jugs are made from Scepter in Canada. They've survived me treating them like complete **** for years.

Here's the water jugs I use. Pricey, but I've never had a problem.

Re: reliance water jugs

nice jugs!

I rarely need the jugs so I want them collapsible to store away 9 months of the year. 2 or 4 of the hard plastic jugs takes up a lot of room. Big, firm jugs are nice but often get in the way.

Re: reliance water jugs

I've gone through four or five of the Reliance bladders over the last ten years. As said above, some last for years, some develop leaks fast.

We recently bought some hard plastic jugs (5 gal and 7 gal), even though we would rather have collapsible ones.

Seems crazy in this hi-tech age that some company can't make a good indestructible water bladder.

Re: reliance water jugs

I use the Reliance 7 gal ridgid jugs, tough as hell, but the valves break after a while. I just made new ball valves and there still going strong. I tie all my gas & water jugs on the deck at the stays.. has worked for many miles... Michael..

For carrying water, I have two small bladder tanks from Vetus, metric equivalent of about five and ten gallon sizes. They have handles at either end and have fitting for connecting to a half inch hose for dumping into the tank. The ten gallon size is about as big as I would want to hoist on deck with a halyard, but you could easily go larger if you are willing to rig a pump from the dinghy to your water fill. Don't remember the cost, found them on the clearance shelf at a BoatUS store a few years back. They are not cheaply made, construction is similar to an inflatable dinghy and has held up well.

Re: reliance water jugs

If you guys don't mind spending money, I've got a couple of MSR Dromedary bags that I've used for about ten years. There are two that I keep in (or near) the ditch bag. They're designed for mountaineering and are pretty durable but I can't speak to sun resistance long term.

The 10 liter is about $40.
