Geared towards the single guy who doesn't really cook, but my daughter and wife both love it also, as it contains really easy, quick, and relatively inexpensive recipes that you can make when you don't feel like going gourmet.

Will second the foil pouches... if your into spicey find an Asian food mall they stock great lentil and vegetable meals... for protein just add a couple of boiled eggs... also great served with pitta bread.Lived on these when I did the trip from Perth to Tasmania..

If it is sold in a can, it must have preservatives; usually salt-based preservatives. The alternative to canned goods would be in dried/vacuum-sealed pouches; pricey for most folks. Contents of canned goods can be rinsed-off with fresh water a couple of times to dilute the preservatives contents; peas, corn, beans and such. Unfortunately, there's no easy fix to fresh food provisioning. Pre-cooked canned fava beans ($1 USD per 16 oz can), found in middle-eastern stores, are ready to eat; just warm them up, add olive oil, lime juice, and salt to taste; no preservatives, but under a puff of nitrogen gas to retard spoilage.

I find the mystery meat unedible in most anything in a can. We used to use Corned beef in a can alot as a basis for cooking meals when fresh supplies ran out. The best were from New Zealand and Australia. Some brands were basically solid stringy roast beef with very little fat etc.... basically beter quality than your average roast from the store now days.
Some were terrible... buthe NZ and Aus were consistant.

The real problem here is that Stockholm Sailor wants a meal in a can, not a meal in a can that he can de-salt by washing or by adding herbs or spices, fresh onion, carrot, cabbage, potato, or his favorite root veg to. IMO it's quite a challenge. Also, it's sort of like a game: maybe he'll decide on a minimum of "stuff" to take to improve tinned food. He's free to ponder all the inputs.

I am big on cans of refried beans.

You can spread them like peanut butter for sandwiches, roll them in tortillas with hot sauce, drop them with other goodies on chips to make nachos, and stir in hot sauce to make a dip. I have even spooned them out of the can.

But then, I am an omnivore, and in times of desperation, have even caught myself wondering what the dog's cookies taste like.

Yeah, for that he needs to go the more $ freeze dried route.

Corn starch is the same as corn flour and is used regularly as athickener for sauces, even in the domestic kitchen. It is more likely to be the monosodium glutomate and other additives that give the 'tinny' flavour.

I use very few tins on board, preferring to put fresh ingredients in my pressure cooker with beans and pulses to produce tasty, easy to prepare meals.

Interesting. All the various ways of surving on tins. I vote for a can of tuna. With a little relish or ginger it seems to do the trick. And another vote for high quality soups like proggresso. But the guy who circumnavigated the Americas did quite well on freeze dried.
