Eeeeew! I finally checked out the recipe for the president's beer. Start with cans of extract!?! WTF!!! He's the president, for God's sake! It's the White House! They can't even put in the little bit of effort to mash grains?

There is nothing wrong with a well-made extract beer. Some breweries use nothing but. There is nothing pathetic or "Eeeeew"-worthy about it. Plus, everybody learns to brew doing extract batches. Don't be such a snob.

Although I will agree that canned extract is not the best of ingredients.

Well that's the point. Yes, you can make a decent beer with cans of extract. That's how most people learn. That's how I learned. But with only a little more investment in equipment, and a little more time and effort, you can make substantially better beer by mashing your own grains.

I'm not being a snob. For people who are limited in their space available (can't imagine all-grain brewing on a boat, for example), or those who really can't spare the time or space, extract brewing is a great way to go. And if you just don't want to be bothered with learning a bit about mashing and lautering, fine, then extract is for you.

But this is White House! They have all the time and space in the world, if they want. They could make some really world-class beer, if they felt like it. But instead they start with cans of extract.

This is the equivalent of them telling us, here's the president's special recipe for the spaghetti sauce served at the White House: start with a can of Ragu...

I was making the distinction between canned extract and fresher LME sold at local homebrew shops.

First White House batch was extract, like most hombrewers first batch was. Who's to say they won't move to all-grain soon?

No thanks to the President's beer, the beer looks like it would be "weak", but then I'm a brown ale and unfiltered wheat man myself.

MarkJ has brewed beer on his boat while underway. I believe he said it wasn't too bad. It did have a VERY red color to it.

As for brewing underway, if one uses an air lock, how would oxygen get into the beer to interfere with the fermentation process?

I am a home brewer, and I plan to brew onboard. Malt extract will be the way to go, it stores easy and I can always use the cans for a bailer if needed.
