packing refrigerator

Help! What is the key in packing a refrigerator. Did a 3 day trial run in prep. for the Baja Ha Ha. Seems like I was always in the frig. digging for items. I did use one small basket with a handle for easy lifting out for lunch stuff. Need to be able to pack in some order for 10 day trip. Has anyone found some good tricks?

This is a good topic and of course depends on your refer size and config.

Our refer has a hold over plate in the after section which is obviously the coldest part. It can be brought down to freezer temps if we keep running the compressor.

We keep the most perishable items near the plate and then comes the most frequently used.. Milk Juice. Cans on the bottom. We use smallest size like quarts instead of half gallons because as the become empty they take up too much space for the volume of the container.

Use tupperware to segregate things together like butter, cheese and so forth.. cold cults.

A good approach is to bring some frozen meats which will keep the box cool and you can prepare and eat them as they thaw. Same applies to pre cooked and frozen meals.

Another approach is too keep all the drinks in a separate cooler with ice and leave the refer for only food.

Think of meals which don't require a refer... like pasta and so forth.

If your fridge is deep like most, you will necessarily do some digging every day. Our fridge is large (.6 cubic feet), but even if yours is smaller you can adapt this to yours. We have a small plastic bucket (a small wastebasket actually) that holds our lunch meat and cheese. Our bottled drinks stay right up front for easy access. There's a low sided tray that holds condiments, but you may not need to do that for a short trip. Finally, there is a large mesh bag that holds our salad stuff and sits on top because it is easy to remove for getting to the items below. Anything else like plastic containers of leftovers just go wherever. We've used this system since we moved aboard over 3 years ago, and we haven't come up with a system that works any better, but I'm open to suggestions.

Everyone above has great suggestions. I would agree with both of them.

We found that the key to the digging is to adjust your attitude as to what you expect from a refrigerator.

Get used to the digging and place things you seldom use on the bottom.

I hate to say it, but that's really the best approach.

Diana, my "sultan of storage" , discovered and now swears by storage containers called "lock & lock". You can find them in Walmart, Target and a few supermarkets. They are water tight, airtight and inexpensive. They come in different shapes and sizes. One of her sewing machines lives in one inthe bilge!!

Life isn't possible aboard without Lock & Locks!

They are the ultimate for dry storage... keeps things from tasting like a bilge.

Tie a rope around your waist in case you fall in?<G>

And make Real Damned Sure that anything like milk is transferred into a bottle with a good tight cap before it goes in the cooler. Once milk finds a way to leak, you get the wonderful smell of sour milk infiltrating everything, including the bilge drain if it goes there. If you can make partitions or stacks (even using cardboard) so you can "grab a lunch from this pile" "grab a dinner from this pile"...whatever way makes sense to you, as the cook. Color coding, big labels, even if you need it, a sheet of paper taped up on the underside of the lid, with notes about what is where, so you have some idea of where to did once you forget the inventory.<G>

Good idea for big boxes... Griddy things are hard to clean though.
