OLd time Maryland crab house

I will be cruising the upper Chesapeake Bay shortly and am looking for an old time MD crab house, brown paper on picnic tables with cold beer and piles of crabs! Price's in Havre de Grace is good but I don't think I'll be that far north, does anybody know of one around St Michaels/Oxford area? Or maybe the same latitude on the western shore? Awaiting a reply with bait breath!

The Crab Claw in St Michaels, Maryland. Great restaurant, great destination. You can tie up alongside the bulkhead at the museum, anchor out in the protected harbor, or take a slip in the marina.

My number one favorite is Jimmy Cantler's Riverside Inn.

By car on Summer weekends is crazy busy, by boat not so bad. Expect a wait.

The Crab Claw in St. Michaels ( go during the week in the Summer, weekends are very crowded in St. Michaels )

Mike's Crabhouse ( South River for the original and Rock Creek for Mike's North ) Mike's North is across the creek from our current marina, lots of free slips for when eating there, else stay away from that marina.

Now that said...

Anchor on Stoney Creek, take the Dingy and see Jason at Pasadena Seafood and eat back on the shore or boat.

Anyway, think Cantlers is over-rated and expensive. Mike’s North on Rock Creek is a better choice.


If you go into Annapolis, best place is Wild Country Seafood near Back Creek. It’s behind the Maritime Musem.

The Crab and Steak House at St. Michael's marina is more popular with locals than the Crab Claw.


Locals say Mike's on the South River uses imported crabs.


Cheshire Crab was decent, apparently went south, have heard it's back on form again now... but we haven't eaten there in prob'ly 6-7 years...


Cantler's on Mill Creek (Severn) is decent. Thursday's in Galesville is decent. I suspect Skipper's in Deale is decent; they seem to do a good business in crabs. Used to be a place in Deep Creek in the Magothy River... can't remember the name. Probably Harris in Kent Narrows, and maybe Fisherman's Inn on Kent Island...

I had a good night at an All You Eat Crab House in Christfield~ Can't remember the name, but the town is not that big.

There is a place at Ferry Point Marina, I think it is now called the crab deck, was once Magothy Seafood.

The other place on Deep Creek on the Magothy is Clydes.

A number of neighbor slipholders say Cheshire Crab is back and very good.

I'd recommend Crab Claw in St Michaels. If you don't know already... Eastern Shire MD is VERY much more relaxed/ easy going than most Western Shore areas (Oh boy, I've probably really started something!).

Crab Claw is known from Maine to FL. You can eat out on the covered patio, or in the Sun on picnic tables, or up in their 2nd floor air-conditioned restaurant. All the choices overlook the beautiful harbor. St Michaels is also a very charming 'walking' town that has retained its colonial heritage (no traffic signals, no fast food chains. Many Restaurants I sat in the very same booths/ tables still used today when my parents sailed in when I was 10 years old... 50 yrs ago! I retired here 5 yrs ago. Everything you might need is in walking distance (restaurants, grocery stores, fuel boatyard, parts, hardware. And, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum with its low cost bulkhead tie-up and indoor/ outside exhibits is an added special... always interesting events/ displays, and wooden skipjacks or bigeyes being rebuilt the traditional way. If you have a dink, there is in-harbor anchorage and more a change space just outside the harbor.

Come up into the Eastern Bay and on up the Miles River to get the St Michaels. You can hang in the Wye River area before/after visiting St Michaels with its 100 or so wx protected nooks & crannies, bays, coves, & creeks.

Also surprised no one mentioned Harrison's on Tilghman Island. But enter via Choptank River/ Harris Creek side... the cut from the Bay side only carries 3.5-4' now... scheduled for dredging in the Fall. If you come around via Harris Creek you can enter the cut (Knapps Narrows)... depth ok from that direction... and go under the (on-demand) drawbridge and there are restaurants on either side just beyond the bridge that offer courtesy bulkhead dockage while dining. If not too busy, often let you stay the night... or come on back out into Harris Creek, turn left, and up Harris Creek15 minutes and turn into Dunn Cove... a very protected/ popular anchorage.
