Need Denatured Alcohol in Mexico

Any alcohol that' s 95% or above should work just find. Buy a big bottle of really cheap vodka. If it's a scam and it's really denatured, so what!

G'Day all,

This thread is why many of us advise against alcohol stoves for cruising offshore!

But some years ago in Mexico we bought "Alcool de Cana" (rough spelling) at the booze store. It was 95% cane alcohol, allegedly drinkable, and pretty cheap. Vodka won't make it... at most 100 proof which is only 50% alcohol.

Good luck, and be on the lookout for a good LPG stove!

We found the stove fuel about one mile from the La Cruz Marina at a paint store. You have to ask for Alcohol Industrial. Most paint stores will not have it, but Grupo Alsa Pinturas does. They have a store in La Cruz and Bucerias. I was no trying to start a thread on the merits of LPG vs Alcohol but was hoping to find some cruisers in the area that had bought some. I do appreciate all the info on the different names this stuff is called. Our stove is working great and we have not plans to change it out.

But given that it is a useful product worldwide outside of simply boat cooking (or as a cheap source of booze for Alkies) then no surprise that it is available in Mexico - and even less that it is sold with a name such as "Alcohol Industrial". For me that sounds hopeful it comes in jumbo size and without the Marine mark up

I dunno how the boat / marine supply market works in Mexico, but my guess is that a product not on a shelf within 5 minutes walk of the dock doesn't mean not available anywhere else in the whole country - more a case that it might need an order or simply a wander into the nearby town / city.

I read on a another forum that Home Depot in Mazatlan used to carry it when they first opened, but once they sold out they just never restocked. Makes me wonder if it's just a matter of demand, and maybe not enough people have bothered to ask...

Anyway, I'm glad you took the time to look around instead of solving the problem by upgrading to propane
