2 good way to mitigate shading issues on a boat:
1) Wire Solar Panels in parallel to 1 mppt controller
2) Have a separate controller for each Solar Panel
If you have different size panels with different voltages, then its best to wire them in series to 1 mppt controller.

Thanks. That's useful.

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
Sailor chic, what's the conversion numbers for 'a hair less 'to 'hill of beans' and are those units SAE or metric? :in the interests of technical accuracy as some of us are trying to learn from this thread. My own interests concerning efficiency are somewhat different from the other posters here . Boiling water for morning coffee could include shooting the deer on the beach, row ashore ,light fire ,place pot, skin and gut deer, dig a few clams, pick some berries ,row back with stash and pot. Brew and enjoy. Use big thermos for later. So by doubling up on activities the efficiency numbers of boiling water can be quite astounding while saving at least 2 pop can refunds of propane

Be aware that the electric kettle is a 1500 watt appliance and a suitable sized inverter is needed.

Actually most of them are more than 2kW.
Much better for use on board are the 1 liter, 800 watt to 1000 watt ones. Larger ones may take disproportionate charge out of your battery due to Peukert. N.B.!

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
At approximately $.01 in fuel cost to boil a cup of water, it would take a lifetime or more to recoup the cost of solar panels, controllers, batteries and an inverter.
It seems that if you can afford the coffee, you should be able to afford to heat the water.

Assuming the only electric thing on your boat is the kettle. Makes sense.

Ron you really need to stop nit picking . Heating water via electric provided by solar via the batteries is just one little piece of the equasion .

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
I don't know if this was asked. The Hamilton beach 4099 is a 1500 watt kettle. They make 750 and 1000 watt kettles also.
Does a 750 watt kettle take twice as long to boil the water? I'm guessing the energy usage would be the same or close? I know our electric coffee maker pulls about 90 amps but only for about 5-7 minutes.
Wanting a more efficient kettle. Is there benefit to a 750 vs 1000 vs the 1500? We only have a 2000 watt inverter.

Our electric Kettle is 1500 watts and we have a 2000 watt inverter. All works well.

Oddly the higher wattage element would use a bit less power. This mainly due to the extraheat loss from the pot for the double amount of time it would take at 750 watts. But then the Peukert factor might make it a wash, if using batteries.

Or, you could recognize how ridiculous this entire thread is and see the sarcasm.

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
I agree that an electric kettle is the way to go for efficiency. But that long extension cord really slows the boat down.

Re: Most efficient way to boil water on a boat
I like this topic Cotemar, have you run any efficiency numbers for using a nice single induction cooktop? According to the press these are the most efficient means of turning electric into heat.

The most efficient would be a big metal washer dropped inside a well insulated mug.
I think this was discussed a year or so ago here
