Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

We are planning to remove our propane stove and oven and replacing with electric.

The stove seems an easy decision: induction hob. We will need to swap out some of our beloved Tefal cookware with removable handles, but that’s OK.

For oven, we’re not just sure. We currently use our oven primarily for grilling (sandwiches, flat breads, vegetables, anything with a cheesy topping), roasting (vegetables, meat cuts), baking (breads, muffins) and keeping pancakes or bacon warm while cooking more.

The only thing we don’t do on our boat that we do in our land home is using a microwave: defrosting things and cooking vegetables.

Our oven choice has three options:[LIST][*] no oven, use countertop appliances instead such as toaster oven, electric grill, etc[*] air fryer type countertop oven like this Sunbeam https://www.sunbeam.co.nz/kitchen-an...-and-air-fryer[*] built in convection oven with or without microwave capability such as this Panasonic https://www.panasonic.com/au/consume...nn-cf770m.html

The costs go up as we go down the list.

Is there any need for microwave capability? We don’t have the time pressure on the boat, but cooking vegetables in a microwave is fast and efficient with no added water.

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

i find a microwave really really useful. I have it mounted in a cabinet and run it of the invertor , heat hot milk , cook veggies, heat soups etc

I dont find I use the oven a lot in the summer as it too hot and nobody really wants hot food

Oh by the way , Im the cook , wifey isnt

I find a small electric chopper useful , and of course my nespresso machine !!

I had an electric stove in a previous boat , removed it for Gas, just like home a Gas stove is easily the best for those that like to cook

The biggest issue is my 2 ring gas stove is the limited space on the stove top

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

There are some really excellent toaster ovens out there...they have come a long way. This is what I would do.

We have a propane oven on board which gets lots of use. However I have found a cast iron pan with a lid is also an excellent baking tool.

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

I live aboard and never use my propane oven anymore. I have learned to make even reasonable biscuits on the cooktop with by preheating the pan lid on the burner. I loved to cook when I lived on land but it is too hot on the boat to cook for more than 15 minutes anyway and my cooking habits have changed accordingly.

We have a 3 burner smev oven that is past its use by date
Marine/caravan ovens annoy me being slightly smaller and considerably more expensive so we are considering with the price difference getting the kitchen modified so as to fit a standard house sized 4 burner gas oven.

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

For weight purposes, I use one of these.

In reality, we only use the oven for baking.

The drawback is I have to run a generator bake, but it is quite capable of cooking a pizza and it’s good to run the generator a couple times a week for an hour or something.

Note: we are installing or getting a griddle for the galley and actually are putting in a Korean bbq table out in the aft area. The oven just isn’t used enough to dedicate a large area, the weight and propane hookup.

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

I have a gas oven, and a toaster oven, and hate both of them. I have a built-in microwave/grill, however, which I use daily. I've always had microwaves on all my boats going back decades and wouldn't be without it. For me the microwave is needed 20x more often (if not more) than any kind of oven, but then, that depends on how you cook. I've had people on board who were baking something almost daily.

If I were building a new boat, I would have a combination electric convection oven/microwave. Convection is the dog's bullocks. I don't mind cooking on a gas cooktop (even if induction is better), but gas ovens suck. Boat gas ovens double suck.

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

I agree entirely dockhead , I had a gas oven in the house for a while , pita , moved to conventional electric. The boats gas oven gets virtually no use , and it doesn’t even have a grill , which is occasionally useful. A good Dutch oven on the stove top is a good substitute anyway

I bake a lot at home , but rarely on the boat , I don’t eat bread or cakes , so stuff just goes off anyway as wifey only likes a small amount of these things . ( in the house I give-away a lot of baked goods ) I find in the heat , on the boat , there’s no demand for hot things generally and the oven adds heat to the interior

Agree 100% re microwave and if I had the space I’d go for a much fancier combination microwave . Right now I’m limited to a dinky 600w unit

For now I have and use aa simple Coleman fold up camp oven.
On top of my force10 propane stove

https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-20000.../dp/B0009PURJA
Folds up nice and small when I'm not using it.

I’m guessing this works just as well as any of the marine or RV ovens?

Bonus is that thermometer. You can see the actual temperature.

With the marine and RV ovens, you get a lousy heat distribution and you don’t know the actual temperature . You have to rotate everything and can’t rely on timing to know how long to cook something for.

It certainly couldn't be worse.

Re: Live aboards: what kind of oven do you have or wish you had?

We used the four burners atop our Princess propane oven, but only used the oven itself for storing pans. Our small electric toaster oven was far more efficient and our baking needs were minimal.
