Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
Can someone tell me what it is similar to in taste?
Seems like at $48 a case, as opposed to $65 for the ones we know, we could buy a couple more cases!!!!

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
I drink Kalik light, It is similiar to lighter American Beers and I love it.
They also have Sands and both are made in the Bahamas.
I really prefer Kalik though.

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
I thought it reminds me of Red Stripe. Or Turks Head. And the diff in price is most likely transportation costs. Remember stuff from North America has to be shipped over, and the cost is by volume, not weight. Beer takes up a lot of room. Might be some import duties on the $65 beer, too, that a native brewer would be protected from.

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
Kalik is great. Pretty solid lager. Kalik Gold is a little bit stronger - around 7.5% abv.

Agree with what was said thus far. You could take beer with you or drink rum. The rum seemed to be priced about the same or just slightly higher than the US.

I was told that Kalik moved its brewery to Melbourne Florida after Nassau went to RO water instead of the Water from the limestone aquifer on Andros. The story I heard is that Bush Crack took over the old brewery in Nassau. I can confirm that Kalik is brewed in Melbourne. I just don't know if that's the only place it's brewed. Does anyone know for sure if they stopped brewing it in Nassau?

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
I don't think it's ever been brewed in Melbourne. It's owned by Heineken and brewed at a large brewery in the Bahamas.

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
Are you sure you don't have it confused with a different brewery?

No, not confused. I know a lot of cruisers from Melbourne and they were very excited when Kalik came to town. I was in Melbourne for 2 months this winter. Like I said, it might not be the only place it's brewed. One Melbourne local who claimed to know said the RO water in Nassau changed the taste and they could get limestone aquafer water in Melbourne. I did not get that directly from the company however. I'm in the Bahamas now and noticed that the Kalik label still says "The Beer of the Bahamas" but I also seemed to remember it saying brewed in Nassau, but now the label doesn't say where it's brewed. I'll have to keep checking the bottles I suppose.

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
That's weird... I can't find anything about the brewery. I know Florida Beer Company is located in Melbourne and they just did a huge expansion. They make all of the "Duff" beer for the Simpson's area in Universal Studios in Orlando. Perhaps this is where they contract brew for Kalik? Or does Kalik have it's own actual brewery?

Can't you just try one and see for yourself?

I could not remember the name of the brewery, but now that you mention it Florida Beer Company sounds right. It may be (probably?) under contract and may be only for the US market, but I did note that the "Brewed in Nassau, Bahamas" that I seem to remember on the label is no longer there. With it now being available in the US, maybe they had to contract out some production.

Re: Kalik Beer in the Bahamas
It's always been available in the U.S., just hard to find until now. Craft beer is on a huge uprise, and Kalik is available at almost any Publix now, so I'm sure they want to increase expansion as much as they can, completely normal to contract brew. PBR never had it's own brewery, but instead just gave the recipe to different breweries and had it brewed for them. I'm quite positive that it's still brewed in full force in the Bahamas as well, just using Florida Beer Co. as additional output.
Something else - they are in the process of building a huge facility in Lakeland, FL, where people, as well as large breweries will be able to brew more beer. Cigar City has already planned on using the facility once it's finished. Pretty cool news.
