Innovative new kind of water maker - water from air
This one was built by an avid biker to replenish oneself when pedaling in humid climates. A very interesting perspective, and I wonder if it could scale up for sailboats?

From the articles below, it looks like it is right on top of the unit itself.
A bit more about the design:

Wow. Something like that mounted on a pole like a wind generator. I think I would buy one right now.

I hate sentences that go... "Under hot and humid conditions, "Fontus" can allegedly produce about 17 ounces of agua" and don't end in "and do so in xx minutes".
Anyhow... its an hour. So, theoretically, we are talking 3 gallons every 24 hours with enough wind, and this is a prototype.

Its important! 17 ounces of water a day when its hot and humid is just enough to get my lips wet but 17 ounces of water an hour is enough to stay hydrated.

They are saying .5 L an hour, and that has to be a Peltier plate, no way I'm buying into this, if nothing else, where does that much energy come from? Peltier plates are inefficient and to condense 1/2 L an hour takes significant cooling and air flow, compare this to an airconditioner for example.

Wouldn't be cool if you could combine the refrigerated air conditioning with fresh water intake? That the cool dry air outlet could fill your yacht? That would work for me.
There are a number of dehumidifiers on the market, I wonder it one of them could be fashioned to provide fresh water for drinking.

Re: Innovative new kind of water maker - water from air
Newt people will disagree based on metals used in the evaporator etc., but condensed water is the same as distilled water, think about it. Even if lead solder is used, water contact is short and at low temps, I bet the lead content is extremely low if it's even measurable.
Most evaporators are aluminum. I don't think there is any lead
An Airconditioner does "make" a significant amount of water

At the speed at which they are able to manipulate molecules and force them together in ways never before conceived its won't be long before we are able to break the law of thermodynamics and create permanently hot or cold materials.

If you look at the size of the prototype, clips to the frame of a bicycle, 17 oz/hr isn't so bad... ISSUU - Industrial Design Portfolio by Kristof Retezár ... I see potential.

These are also called dehumidifiers. You can buy a good one at Target for under $200. Why reinvent the wheel. They take some power and obviously the more humid the better they work. I live in California and am already capturing about 5-7 gallons a day just from my Air Con condensation line. I just use it to water plants.

Re: Innovative new kind of water maker - water from air
I have a ton of dehumidifiers all over my boat to try to keep the mold down. Do the Walmart dehumidifiers warm the boat up or cool it down? Wonder if I should be looking at water samples from either dehumidifiers or ref. air conditioners- see if those sources could easily be turned into potable water.
Finally, the device is not new- remember Dune? It had such a device in play on the planet. With wind always whipping around my boat, I wonder if it could be powered with just the wind (like on Dune).
