In anticipation of his navigational deficiencies, we slipped a plane ticket into his backpack in hopes that he could at least find his way back home.

If man were meant to go beerless, then a pacific crossing would would take 3 hours instead of 3 weeks and there would be no ugly people. But seeing as a crossing takes 3 weeks, and ugly people do indeed exist, BEER is a required part of any cruisers diet and the beerless are to be met with much suspicion.
That my friend is post of the month.

I once knew a guy who only drank *boiled* water. He is in prison now.

The Men’s Marathon Medalists for the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp were:
Gold medal Hannes Kolehmainen Finland
Silver medal Jüri Lossmann Estonia
Bronze medal Valerio Arri Italy

Having won the Allen Cup, the Winnipeg (my birthplace) Falcons went on to win the first ever Olympic Hockey Gold medal in 1920, defeating Sweden in the finals 27-1. They didn’t compete on Guinness.

However, we do know that the great Guy Lafleur would smoke and drink beer between periods when he played in the NHL. We know that the cigarettes would have had a negative impact so it only stands to reason the beer is why he could do it!

Thats the 'Drunken Chicken'.... stand a coupla small cans of 'Bud' in the tray.... sit the chickens on them side by side... forcefully... so they don't fall over then roast them... using their own skin fat.
Delish tender chicken... I like to slide some lemon slices under the breast skin as well...
Then open a decent beer for while I wait...

Re: How long can you survive on beer alone?

On Bud? As if Bud were a beer?

Probably as long as one can survive on water only. Couple of weeks, I think.

But if you are smart and fill your tanks with B E E R then I think you could go on for very long - as long as your liver would not refuse to co-op, in fact.

What's that old saying from Ben Franklin I think:

Re: How long can you survive on beer alone?

Wasnt it the old British Navy in the 1800's that alloted men 1 gal of "weak" beer per day. They got no more to drink until it was gone or so stale it could not be drunk. Their water supply usually went nasty after a week or two and it was a long time until they discovered the adding lime juice thing.
1 Gal per day, no pretzels, plenty of hard tack n weevils

Re: How long can you survive on beer alone?

seems to me like there's a fair amount of guess work going on here.

purely in the interests of discovery...

im probably just about willing, RELUCTANTLY, to undertake an experiment in order to investigate further and help provide some real answers. Send beers to the following address and I will report as regularly as possible:

El Capitan,
My Boat,
San Antonio
Ibiza
Spain

cheers x

Re: How long can you survive on beer alone?

Being as beer is an essential item on any checklist and is a mainstay on most sailboats, perhaps additional warnings should be placed on labels. Along with the dangers to the unborn and the danger to those who dare to share the road (or water) with you, there are very real dangers in the propulsion of used product overboard. Colregs and inland rules should probably have additional paragraphs on the necessity of being tethered while peeing. Also, visitors should always be advised as to which side they should be on to attempt this balancing act.
