How Long Can You Survive on Beer Alone ?

We've seen a few threads -- usually on water tankage or watermakers -- veer off in this direction, so I thought it might be appropriate to post this link:

The Budweiser diet: How long can you survive on beer alone? - By Jeremy Singer-Vine - Slate Magazine

Partial excerpt:

"An Iowa man completed his Lent-long beer fast on Sunday, marking the occasion with a bacon smoothie. During the 46-day feat, J. Wilson consumed only beer and water, emulating a centuries-old tradition once practiced by the Paulaner monks of Munich, Germany. How long could a man survive on beer and water?

"Not more than a few months, probably. That's when the worst effects of scurvy and protein deficiency would kick in. (Liver disease is a serious risk of chronic alcohol use, but it takes longer to arrive.) If you kept to a strict beer diet—and swore off plain water altogether—you'd likely die of dehydration in a matter of days or weeks, depending on the strength and volume of beer consumed. There's plenty of water in beer, of course, but the alcohol's diuretic effect makes it a net negative in terms of hydration under most conditions."

As a fan of fermented barley malt I applaud his spirit if not his choice of beer. I find on a normal beer rich diet I require pottasium a suppliment to aid with sleep and extra vitamins to offset the increased urination. Cook eventually arrived at sourkraut for staving off scurvey, which is especially apropos since it goes so well on a smoky washed down with a tall foamy one.

add a bit of lime, the scurvy part is taken care of--could last a long time-- many minerals in beer..and enough alcohol just to make ye not care.....

Clearly, more research is needed.

finally, a thread we can really get stuck into!

you can still get Guinness in hostpital & prescribed by your doctor (and free on NHS!) in UK for certain conditions - food in a glass beer is mainly water btw (forgetting for a sec it is a diuretic).

I dont know if this is propaganda but... during the olympics in belgium many years ago an irishman who was very sceptical of the water there took several kegs of guinness with him and ended up winning the marathon [please be true]!

lastly, in the golden age of sail they had kegs of beer & rum instead of water, presumably because it kept much longer, and the crew lived until AT LEAST 35 years old!!!

haha

Re: How long can you survive on beer alone?

Depends on the beer. Coors or Bud, I can go a very long time without.

Re: How long can you survive on beer alone?

I witnessed a guy do half of the milk run without consuming a single beer. It was one of the most agonizing feats I'd ever seen.

I don't remember much about the lad, other than he liked to read a lot. Apparently his sense of direction had been impaired by lack of beer consumption, because one day whilst he was ashore we decided to move the boat and he never was able to find it.

In anticipation of his navigational deficiencies, we slipped a plane ticket into his backpack in hopes that he could at least find his way back home.

If man were meant to go beerless, then a pacific crossing would would take 3 hours instead of 3 weeks and there would be no ugly people. But seeing as a crossing takes 3 weeks, and ugly people do indeed exist, BEER is a required part of any cruisers diet and the beerless are to be met with much suspicion.
