Guides For Collecting And Eating Marine Life

Hello!

Any body know of any guides (print or online) which describe the various marine flora and fauna from the worlds' tropical regions which can safely be eaten? Information about the species which carry ciguatera toxin (and other toxins) and the time of year they are most susceptible would be very useful.

Has any one ever come across a comprehensive guide on this topic? Thanks and have a great day!

PS. I googled the heck out of this topic, and couldn't find anything.

I have a small book called "Edible? Incredible" that is sea food focused. Not a book for ciguatera type info though. More like ... "you can eat this..here's how"

Thanks rebel heart! I have that book and never noticed Chapter 12 until you pointed it out. Sometimes I need a swift kick in the rear to stay on task

It's taken me about two thousand miles and a year to really start to understand that book.

Re: Guides For Collecting And Eating Marine Life

I watch alot of that stuff on youtube, most of it in the EU thats where i am but just youtube things like edible seaweeds or something semilar. Most of the seaweed around the UKs is edible and very healthy only 1 or 2 toxic ones but only something you woulld get a upset stomach with. Also you could see if you can find the Series "A cook on the wild side" by Hugh fearnly whittingstall. theres a good bit in thaat series with marine foods.

Hope that helps a little.

You might try this one too, I have not read it, but in the day Euell Gibbons was the authority on eating in the wild. We used the "Edible Incredible" book back in the late 70s.

I also agree on the cruisers fishing handbook. It was handed down to us by chance so we just threw it in with all of our other books not realizing how often we'd actually use it. Great tips and advice for cruisers. Like the book says, we also made sure to talk to the locals (we were in the Bahamas) about what we should/shouldn't eat... i.e. don't eat any Barracuda north of Little Whale Cay!
