Great coffee on the boat

We are always looking for a better cup of coffee and after trying several different methods we have settled on the French Press. As such, I thought I'd share that we came across some interesting coffee paper filters from Denmark that makes cleaning the Press super easy on the boat (something my better 1/2 has always complained about). The filters basically create a large 'tea' bag for grounds so cleaning is a snap...just put the grounds in...pour the hot H2O and fold the 4 flaps over...let steep and then press. No messy grounds in the sink to potentially clog the drain because they are contained in the bag. Thought other java lovers might appreciate.

So Starbucks sells a stainless french press that has double walls and floats as does the top. Toss it ovbd with a tether and it bobs around and cleans itself. If you are groggy and forget the tether, it floats!

We have used this one from REI on our boat and in our camper for several years. It is huge and it stays hot for a long time! It probably floats but I doubt the innards do so we just rinse in lake or sea water. We have also given many of these as Christmas presents and everyone loves them.

The SS insulated one in the photo we use is from Canada and has a double filter so it produces coffee with very little sediment and we purchased it through Williams Sonoma Espro French Coffee Press | Williams-Sonoma

I bought an aero-press from Amazon. About $30.
Unbreakable plastic. FAST! about 45 seconds. No steeping or bitterness. Cheap filters. Makes espresso or cafe americain (regular).
Really love it. Got one for my kids and they think its great.

We use a french press on all of our sailing school trips. I think it is the same as the REI one. It is made in Montana. We just rinse the grounds out in the water. Just be sure to give it a good fresh water rinse. The first one we had rusted around the base.

We are thinking about trying an Aero Press, has anyone tried one on their boat?

We have an Aero-press that we use at home and plan to take it with us when we depart in December. Makes great coffee, simple and takes up very little room. Only problem is I think we actually use more coffee as it taste so good. Oh...don't loose your screw on plastic screen or at least bring a spare!!

Our problem with the French Presses has been that they don't typically make enough coffee for our two 16 oz mugs. I see this one is bigger, but it's plastic. and steel parts are a non-starter.

I've been thinking of going to a couple of the individual, one cup Melitta coffee filter funnels. The ones you just put on the top of your coffee mug, and pour water through.

Can't get much simpler than that.

We use (after our insulated one had the top plastic rim break) a bodum SS liter press.

We fill not only the West Marine SS mug, but the larger one with a collar around the neck (less substantial - much lighter then the WM - and less insulation) from each pot.

To the point that the lids on the mugs frequently overflow and spit at us as they seal...

The number on the bottom non-skid is an 11 in a circle. Inside the plastic lid filter portion, it's a 32 in the same sized circle.

Unfortunately, I can't find it in their catalog; it may be discontinued.

In any event, get a liter size and your two mugs will be full.

Both at home and on the boat we empty out the grounds by pouring in enough water so that when you swirl it around, it is liquid enough to pour out when you swirl it and tilt it over, a bit like panning for gold. This we pour onto a square of kitchen towel placed in the bottom of the sink. When the water filters on through, the corners can be folded over and the whole thing squeezed out. The remaining grounds in the cafetiere (that's what we call them over here ) can be rinsed off under the tap. This description has taken about ten times as long to write as it takes to do what is described

Wait!!!! Don't you have to macerate it first?
