Fruit and Vegetable treatment

I apologize in advance because I know this has been answered before, but I’m traveling and my phone searches aren’t robust.

What brand fruit and vegetable rinse do you use?

Also how reliable are the fruits and veggies at a road side stand in St. John USVI?

Re: Fruit and Vegetable treatment

There are two kinds of contaminants you should be concerned about. On one hand, there are chemicals used to kill or repel pests. On the other hand there are living contaminants, often from organic fertilizer or dirty water. Depending on the chemicals, water is usually the best way to get them off. That is why things like broccoli and related greens require a lot of rinsing. For living organisms, the simplest rinse and one recommended by the FDA and widely used in the food service industry is a simple weak bleach solution. A splash of bleach in a gallon of water is about right. You can always rinse off excess bleach, and it evaporates too. Not much different from the exposure in a swimming pool.
That said, remember that each area of the world has its own assortment of bugs. Locals in any location do not get sick drinking the water -- visitors do. That is why athletes often travel with their own supplies. If you spend some time in any location, your system will adapt.

Re: Fruit and Vegetable treatment

Evaluate using grapefruit seed extract (GSE) and see if its myriad of uses suit your needs.

It does for us.

Cheers, Bill

PS: I meant to include this article specifically addressing your vegetable/fruit washing question.

US NIH disagrees with the Wikipedia author(s):

Results: The GSE was consistently antibacterial against all of the biotypes tested, with susceptibility zone diameters equal to or greater than 15 mm in each case.

Conclusions: Our preliminary data thus suggest an antibacterial characteristic to GSE that is comparable to that of proven topical antibacterials. Although the GSE appeared to have a somewhat greater inhibitory effect on gram-positive organisms than on gram-negative organisms, its comparative effectiveness against a wide range of bacterial biotypes is significant.
FWIW

Cheers, Bill

Wash in a 0.001% potassium permanganate bath, rinse and leave to dry.

Study cited has nothing to do with "NIH" (Authors were at UTMB, Galveston).

Read further to see how that in vitro study lacks validity.

Alternatively: https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/not...-seed-extract/

But perhaps we should stop thread drift. OP can do their research.
