Question Favorite Coffee? Prep Method?

I've noticed there's a good number of active cruisers and liveaboards on this forum. I've also noticed in my couple of years out here that many of us are HUGE coffee drinkers. I barely touch the stuff when I'm living ashore but on the boat I crave it. I make it so strong it stains all my cups. I use one of these to make coffee



Well, mine's aluminum, a lot less fancy, and has a plastic filter (I got it in South America). But it's the same basic concept. Sometimes I fill half the filter up with ground coffee so I can get it nice and strong. It looks soot black in the cup. I've also got a French Press on board and
I use to have a 110v percolator (Mr. Coffee) which I stupidly left in Ecuador. I've seen expresso machines on boats before.

One of my favorite things in the world is crawling up into the cockpit for a 2am watch with a fresh cup of coffee in my hand. Black with a teaspoon of sugar.

My favorite coffees so far are Jamaican Blue Mountain, Cafe Gardella (from Ecuador), and good old Dunkin' Donuts (I brought a big bag back with me to the South Pacific). I loved the yellow and black bag from Panama and several other Panamanian and Costa Rican coffees. I buy whole beans and grind em fresh on the boat.

Where'd you find your favorite coffees and how do you make it? What do you think of those countries where Nescafe is the only choice in restaurants?

We use a french press. Found a double wall stainless steel one at the Annapolis Boat Show a couple years ago. Served in double wall stainless cups. The double wall keeps everything hot longer. We're very happy with plain ol Maxwell House Columbian. Find in in the vacumn packs whenever we can.

We buy something like a french roast ground to turkish or very fine and use #2 Melita filters in one cup side plastic holder and just pour boiling water in. Voila! We also have a fine mesh gold filer for the same. You can fold a paper towel in a pinch to use as a filter.

No coffee pots and you make by the cup. You can use a filter with coffe a second time by adding some more coffee. We use this at home and on the boat.

I like my coffee strong and black. I only have one cup a day, first thing in the morning, but make it about four times stronger than most people normally drink. My favorite is Cafe Bustelo, a Latino fine grind, dark roast coffee. I brew it in an electric drip coffee maker at home, but on the boat I have a plastic filter that fits over a coffee mug and holds a No. 2 cone filter. Just pour hot water into it and voila, you have a single mug of great coffee.

By the way, all this bashing of Nescafe--you must be talking about instant coffee, right? IMHO, there's no instant worth drinking, no matter what brand. But I think the best cup of espresso I ever had was Nescafe. A Swiss friend here on Nevis used to work for Nescafe. They market an espresso maker that takes small, sealed capsules of coffee. We were at his home for dinner, and he just popped a capsule in the machine, pushed a button, and seconds later I had a single cup of absolutely delicious espresso. Lavazza makes a similar product, but I don't like their blend as much as the Nescafe.

Next we'll be discussing the wonderful aroma and taste of Postum! ;-) Remember that one? My great grandmother drank it. I still kinda gag at the thought!

Colombian coffee is the best all around

Colombian coffee, also known as Colombian Mild, is characterized by its soft terroir. Only crops of Coffea arabica of Maragogype, Caturra, Typica and Bourbon cultivars, among others, are grown. When Colombian coffee is freshly roasted it has a bright acidity, is heavy in body and is intensely aromatic.

Costa Rican Tarazzu = Heaven in a cup. I like mine prepared in french press if the beans are oily, however it is better in a drip style coffee maker if the coffee is dry or pre-ground.

P.S. the plastic french press from west marine is an awful and cruel device.

My favorite, Community Coffee Dark Roast, on Dr's orders I'm drinking decaff now, ten years ago I couldn't understand how anyone could stomach the stuff, now I'm used to it,
Friends who live aboard invited us for breakfast he buys his beans green and has a small roaster, he roasts and grinds each batch. It was very good and smooth. The Belgian waffles on the boat were great too!

I have heard it said in So. America, "Nescafe, No es cafe" Apologies to all Nescafe drinkers
