Eggs - why N. America is wrong refrigerating them
Many sailors know unwashed and unrefrigerated eggs can keep a long time.
Here is an interesting article of why it is done in North America but not allowed in Europe.

Can I get an AMEM BROTHER!
Just imagine the HUGE amount of Refrigeration energy spent to refrigerate eggs from Farm to Store....
But try selling unrefrigerated eggs and they will literally come in Black Combat gear and kick down your Farm (Hen house) door with guns drawn to stop you...freedom eh...

Re: Eggs - why N. America is wrong refrigerating them
Well, AVB3,
Thank you for that! We haven't refrigerated eggs for over a quarter of a century, but it is definitely one of those quirks one notices. I would not expect the great American populace to be swayed by data in any event, not such a good track record. But, still, thanks for the explanation. That's wonderful!

Re: Eggs - why N. America is wrong refrigerating them
We haven't refrigerated our previously refrigerated store bought eggs for years.
We have recently found a local farm to buy fresh uncleaned eggs from. So much better tasting.

Water Glass, aka Sodium Silicate was used for years to preserve eggs.

Is that in North America, or else where in the world. If its North America, I'm not sure that solves the issue that the report talks about.

Now if we could just get countries in the Caribbean to stop selling fertilized eggs in the stores!

I went over on Bing and asked the same question.
The main reason is to prevent the risk of Salmonella.

There's a fundamental problem with this article. Eggs ARE refrigerated in Europe.

i do not bow to bureaucracy. i use common sense and research . my own research. i test it on me. if i die i cannot write about it can i. if i get sick, i will mention it.
i use methods used by old ones i personally knew back in the day, when not all farms were subsidized and my uncle's unsubsidized apple farm was fun and haven. those of us who paid attention then know now how to keep our foodstuffs good without that fridge ....
eggs are not refrigerated in mexico

Sounds like the biggest differences come from the immunization of the chickens. against salmonella. Not required in the us but the listed drop in cases before and after in Britain makes it sound pretty good.
With very tightly controlled transport temperatures and ensuring cleaner facilities to start with following close behind.

I've seen them refrigerated in Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium, and France. Not sure about other countries in Europe, where I haven't actually shopped for them.

Re: Eggs - why N. America is wrong refrigerating them
injection against salmonella??? chickens here are free range babies..lol. lucky to see a veterinarian. some are lucky to have hen houses, but most run free.
usa has the food and drug administration being bureaucratically able to dictate your health habits, as well as the health habits of your dinner. not the entire world has that dubious honor.
remember these are same folks who declared aspirin as a safe drug .
in the larger market stores, mega, comercial, soriana, bodega, walmart, costco, and some others gringos frequent, eggs are in fridge. the smaller tiendas, no.
