Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

Powdered goat's milk isn't so bad.

Powdered milk takes up a lot less space on a boat and has a longer shelf life.

Not a big milk consumer...prefer broccoli for my calcium boost.

In regards, to parents tricking their kids eating stuff...remember my Dad coming home one evening with an exotic new hors d'oeuvres he was serving on crackers. I was known to eat things most kids wouldn't...like steamed soft shell clams, soft shell crabs, oysters, etc...

So I tried this cracker with this soft stuff spread on it...

It was COW TONGUE!

He told me after I exclaimed how good it tasted.

It is amazing I ever got over that mentally, come to think of it...maybe I haven't?!?

The things parents do!!!

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

I drink Nido milk twice a day, once with muesli for breakfast, and a glass at lunch. I add the powder to raisins and sunflower seeds, add water, and then mix in oats. For drinking, I use a shaker (peanut butter jar) to make milk. I usually add about 4 spoons of Nido and a little more than a cup of water and shake it up. I don't measure exactly, after you do it a few times you don't need to measure anymore. Nido in the 3.2 lb cans is the cheapest. I go through under 3lbs a month.

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

When the ships I was on were at sea too long to keep real milk fresh enough to drink we had powdered. Also had powdered eggs. I could stand the powdered milk used on my cereal but the powdered eggs just didn't hack it.

I don't think I would ever get over that... I would probably keep reminding them the horror I was put through when I was younger... maybe not so much, but it's something unforgetable.

Very disgusting! Parents do crazy things to their kids!

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

An Army cook once told me the secret to using powdered eggs is use one real egg and leave bits of shell in the scrambled eggs, everyone believes the eggs are real then.

haha. That's funny. My dad was an Army cook. I'll ask him about that one.

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

UHT milk is great but Parmalat is vitriol. Try local brands... the ones we try in the Caribbean are all good.

For milk powder, Frisian Flag is good too.

ciao!
Nick.

Dry milk dry eggs and rice:
Any eggs shells must be boiled to be sure there very clean or they can make you sick. But they can add Calsium to the Diet, Backpacking dry eggs are very good if you like scrable eggs with milk and rice?

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

I have been using UHT milk in the Caribbean for 4 years now. It is good for 6 months until opened, then treated like regular milk. Tastes the same and is cheaper than regular milk.

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

I don't use dry very often but I always mix it a bit more than called for, put in COLD water and shake in shaker until it foams. Might add a few ice cubes for even colder and better taste.

Re: Dry Milk: The Secret

Ah the not so good old days. "Milko" powdered milk (a nastier substance has yet to be invented) and let's not forget white margarine that came with an orange powder to colour it. For coffee I prefer condensed milk if the real thing is unavailable.

I remember the margarine and after you broke the little blister with the color you had to squish it around until the color was mixed in
BUT that was probably better and safer than this motor oil "butter" that we have now.
