Yeah, that is why I pretty much gave up on the idea myself, you just cannot disinfect everything.
All our drinking water that we make tea with or cold or make ice we run through a Seagull filter. If you can believe their literature, it’s an awfully effective filter.

Aboard we use a SEAGULL water filter 99Percent filters out everything down to microscopic level . My wife is super sensitive to any chemical added to water. She cant even drink the tap water from home. We change the filter out once a year. You know when the filter needs changing cause your flow almost stops ! Pup in a new cartarge and your ready again . Google seagul water filter.com

Then it is best to drain and flush the water tanks of 'city water' before shutting down and flushing the water maker?

Not really. Just make sure your carbon filter is in place and do the recommended replacement of the carbon cartridge every 6 months. I say 6 months as I seem to remember that was the recommendation from a couple of the different RO system suppliers.

Did he dump it into the water tank(s) or inject it?
How much did he use per 100 gallons of water?

Don't know about dump/inject. He used 50ml per 800 liters do the conversation it's good practice as the rest of the world is metric.

Re: Do you use any sort of sterilizer for water maker water

I know all you hear these days is about back flushing the membranes but I'm a bit suspect. I think it may be for stupid operators and concerned manufacturers. When Spectra brought their first watermaker on the market I bought one..one pump 9 gallons per hour..2 pumps 15 gallons per hour. Never a discussion on back flushing but operating it often was the key. I used that original membrane for over 5 years with no back flushes and the quality and quantity remained about the same, key was I used it almost every day. Sold it with the boat.

Re: Do you use any sort of sterilizer for water maker water

It's all about not allowing the critters to grow in there right?

Many don't want to commit to having to do something every day.

So back flushing becomes necessary, for them.

Local conditions being variable of course.

Or am I missing something?

How many Ah do UV sterilizers typically use? Are they on all the time or just when the water is running?

Re: Do you use any sort of sterilizer for water maker water

@robert sailor - as a matter of interest on your old Spectra, what filters did it come with? I have used Spectra units for many years and the improvement over the years is quite dramatic as they learnt what components went wrong and which of their quite innovative ideas worked - and worked well!

I have not seen a watermaker with a UV steriliser fitted for quite a few years. The suppliers will supply them but at the same time hint that they are a waste of money. The last UV system I saw installed came on as there was water running - but it was not linked to the watermaker - it was a separate system fitted between the water tank and the pressure pump that switched on when the pump was running and off when the water pressure pump switched off. It was fitted with 6 low power 12vdc neon type tubes that looked like the ones fitted in RVs, but just UV about 25cm long and about 1cm in diameter. I have some in my garage somewhere but you could just phone a supplier and find out as there will have been some advancement in their manufacture over the years.
