Cruising Canada to Mexico - Will US Allow Us to Keep Canned Beef Aboard ?

Probably discussed to death, but I cannot unlock the search here. I hoped to transport canned beef on our journey from Canada to Mexico, but looks like US does not permit canned beef or any other sort. Experience?

Meat, milk, egg, poultry, and their products, including products made with these materials, such as dried soup mix or bouillon, are either prohibited or restricted from entering the United States, depending on the types of animal diseases which occur in the country of origin. Fresh (chilled or frozen), dried, cured, and fully cooked meat is generally prohibited from most countries. Canned meat is allowed entry, except beef, veal, lamb, mutton, venison, elk, bison, etc., from countries affected by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
Products containing raw egg ingredients are prohibited from most regions.
Eggs and egg products from Exotic Newcastle Disease (END) and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) affected regions, including cooked eggs, if not accompanied by a USDA Veterinary Service import permit remain prohibited regardless if those items are for personal consumption. There is no exception for cooked eggs from Mexican states of Sonora or Sinaloa.

Yes there are still restrictions on canned beef products, and others, even for personal use.

So I'm a bit adrift on how to provision for a 1 week journey when the US customs wont let me have beef or potatoes or many fresh fruit and veggies, plan was to clear at Neah Bay and sail direct to SF.
Has anyone sailed direct Victoria BC to SF California and cleared customs there? I usually make a lasagna and freeze for one day and another casserole for another. I don't think I'm going to want much to eat, but my captain and crew might.
Ideas welcome from experienced cruisers, especially canadian who have faced the same dillemna

Well I've sailed from Vancouver to San Diego, but then again, the tinned meat and powdered eggs and powdered milk were of US origin, so I did not have any major problems with customs. It all depends on what diseases affect the country of origin.

There is a grocery store at Neah Bay, reasonably well stocked (except for a dearth of beer, it's an Indian reservation...)

I really don't see the problem. Certainly, you can provision for all you desire to eat on the way to San Francisco without plans to have any prohibited foods remaining uneaten when you arrive. I doubt if there will be any foods that you desire that are not available for a price similar to that in Canada at San Francisco grocers. I have had the occasion to have some citrus confiscated upon entering the US from the Bahamas. What are you expecting besides the forfiture of some extra stores? I would suggest compliance.

I don't think it will be a problem until you clear customs- and you can in SF. Do you really want to take that Mad Canadian (Opps I mean Cow) stuff with you all the way down the coast? The Californians will really not like that stuff mixed with their tofu and granola.

If you have a pet on board keep in mind that these bans also apply to pet food. Good luck!

This is what I needed to know, I feel secure that I can feed my gang til SF. Makes more sense to me than having a bunch of my prepared stuff confiscated at the border. We just won't clear in Neah bay as planned, we will plan to eat all that contraband before arriving in California.

If you are planning on stopping anywhere other then Neah Bay on the way not clearing might be a problem. I've heard Neah Bay is an exception because it's the only decent storm shelter getting out of Jaun de Fuca but I wonder if that applies in good weather as well? I've been warned to check in at the first station you pass when sailing in US waters and told to not do so is to risk problems.

This is just scuttlebutt from sailing the Salish Sea but it does come from many sources.

what newt sed. i do not see how tinned foods would make a difference.. but then i am not customs....how is bad stuff gonna jump out of a can and into the main stream of agricultural mayhem. i can see for fresh, but not for tinned .... lets find a common sense ground here.

Why not provision and leave from Port Townsend or Port Angeles? Beer is cheap and beef is available, both in quantity and quality. If you get blown out leaving the Straits, duck into Neah until the weather clears otherwise just keep boogying down the coast. I've made the trip many times with a freezer filled with lasagna and other assorted delicacies and was never asked about whether I had a cow in the head. Maybe the times have changed... Capt Phil

For the real boring answer you need to read the Code of Federal Regulations Titles 7 & 9. Title 7 is plants; Title 9 is animals. Be sure to read the current year, 2011. Things change quite a lot each year in the regulations. Bon Appetit
