Corelle + Wooden Cabin Sole = ????

I'm truly surprised. My wooden cabin sole isn't all that hard. Not like tile or typical land kitchen floors.


I thought Corelle could withstand a lot.

This slipped off the counter while I was doing dishes.

Corelle is pretty hard to break, but when dropped, if they land just right, they explode like your picture. I've dropped a few of them at home. At least onto a tile floor, whether they survive or not is a bit of luck based on how they land. If they land fairly upright, they usually survive. But a hard edge impact at the right angle will sometimes blow them to pieces.

The unpleasantness of ceramic splinters in the bottom of bare feet is why we stocked the galley with melamine tableware. It doesn't go into the microwave or oven, but its never a danger to bare feet either. You can break it if you REALLY try, but it breaks "gracefully."

you’re not kidding. I had to stop dishes and immediately get to vacuuming.

Getting those glass splinters, metal splinters, these are not good.

having dropped Corelle on some pretty hard surfaces before, I was kind of surprised. I just expected it to bounce off the wood. I think I’ve dropped them on tile before and not even had a problem. I guess it hit just right.

We've had corelle for 3 years now and we have broken exactly one plate, similar to your situation, despite having dropped many.

We got Corelle about 11 yrs. ago when we were expecting guests (I didn't have enough plates for all of us). None of it has broken.

I guess the danger of splinters is there, but to me it's small, because we also have glass wine glasses, and our other dishes are pottery, and the trawling lantern's chimney is also glass, so we have lots, and the Corelle is the least likely to break. We don't like plastic dinner ware. Or glasses. Jim and I wear spectacles, so there's another potential source of broken glass. Glass in picture frames, too.

I agree with the last couple posts I have been using Corelle for decades. I love the stuff. It also looks very nice and stays really clean compared to plastic.

Which is exactly why I posted this. It surprised the heck out of me that it broke.

20yrs ago I dropped a Corelle plate on convential teak/holley sole.
It exploded into razor sharp tiny shards and sugar grain size pieces some of which embedded in my leg. All plastic plates ever since.

In many years I have broken one. We love the stuff. You were somewhat lucky because I see some large pieces. When my plate broke there were no large pieces; it seem to instantly turn into 10,000 splinters.

It's a rule on my boat that glass of any kind is not allowed. I'm always afraid of glass fragments getting in the bilges and jamming my pumps and since it's mostly clear, you won't see it until it's too late.

Of course, liquor is the one exception. But if you drop a liquor bottle, you are not allowed on the boat.

I have a set of dishes from Galleyware that are extremely similar to Corelle but "supposedly" won't shatter like Corelle. I just went to their website but do not see that they sell it any longer, I wonder if it was too similar to Corelle and they infringed on patent/copyright??? Just guessing.
I did break a bowl by accident and it did not shatter, but broke in two. We've had the set for about ten years now but before buying this set, we had melamine but the knife scratches drove me crazy and made the plates look like crap, plus the whole microwave business with the melamine. I'll take my chances with the Corelle/Galleyware over the plastic

Same here. Some of the melamine plates I have are just awful. Basically you are eating micro plastics. All the missing plastic ends up in your food.

Much prefer the corelle. But I was very surprised to see that type of damage.
