Re: Comfort foods

Homemade clam chowder using fresh dug razor clams, half & half, onions, bacon, potato chunks, some corn. Mix in just enough cayenne pepper to raise a sweat by the end of the bowl. Nothing like a fresh batch of clams, from the first big tides in the spring.

For me : Comfort food = a food that provides a warm, cozy relaxed feeling. Consumed when sick, cold, tired or otherwise under the weather.

For cold weather it has to be a hearty thick soup for me. Split pea & ham, sirloin veggie & potato, new england clam chowder. Each one served with a pile of saltines.

For hot weather it is usually along the lines of tuna salad, deviled eggs or chicken salad served with saltines. Slice up some tomato and extra sharp cheddar as an accompanyment along with some roasted almonds.

My favorite comfort food lately is calcannon. Lightly boil potatoes, throw in some kale right at the end. Meanwhile, saute onions finely diced in butter until clear. Add milk. Grab a slotted spoon and shovel those taters into the sauce. It's like mashed potatoes with kale and onion. Much more delicious.
Calcannon isn't food - it's made of things food eats.

Re: Comfort Foods

On passage - middle of the night and / or cold, wet & miserable .......Weatabix (breakfast cereal) works well for me - with hot milk and lashings of white sugar ......depending on how much milk added it don't slop out of the bowl - sometimes even when upside down!

Apart from that, Black Coffee and Ciggies seem to be my comfort food .........sometimes the Coffee being replaced by Beer - for the Vitamins .

Oh, and Bacon Sarnies .

Re: Comfort Foods

Here's a simple diet tip:
Eat a chocolate bar one half hour before each meal. It'll take the edge off your appetite, and you'll eat less.

Re: Comfort Foods

Gord, ever hear of bio accumulation? Eating low on the food chain exposes your nervous system to less neurotoxic compounds. It's proven. Have at it with the bacon, candy, and ice cream. I will stick to the high plants, fungi, algae, seeds and nuts.
