Catalina 34 microwave

HI folks,

Have new (to us) 1998 Catalina 34 which we are trying to get ready for the summer and sailing. I have seen many pics with the middle cabinet in the galley replaced with a microwave oven. That cabinet measures a little over 9 inches high. I am having a very difficult time finding a microwave oven whose height is 9 inches. What microwaves (and models ) do people have and how did you get it to fit in there. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine is higher than that so telling you what I have (Panasonic) isn't going to do you much good. An outside height of nine inches is going to be a very small microwave and I think you would be happier with a larger one even if you have to find another place to put it.

That said, the Internet is your friend here. You will find a lot more models on the Internet than in your local stores.

Although rare, if you can find one with a manual timer or electronic but no clock, you'll be better off. The microwave in my home won't even heat water without knowing the time day, date and year. On a boat you won't have constant power and this would be a very big hassle.

SUCCESS!!!!!! ISSUE SOLVED!!! I have a similar microwave problem with my Catalina 320. Just found a microwave from Walmart online, Proctor Silex PS-P70T20AL-V1B that is same size or smaller than the burnt out Samsung. 9.5 x 17.5 x 12. $33. Solves the 9.5 inch height issue. I have looked for a couple of years, hundreds of microwaves. I was about to take a saw to the cabinet and just happened to stumble across this.

New microwave installed. Used 1 1/2 inch sheet metal screws to fix the microwave ‘feet’ to the base of the cabinet. Hope this helps.

If someone lands here while looking for a small microwave, I also found this:

This is the smallest I could find (smaller than Proctor Silex), though I bought the Proctor Silex based on @Billchotkowski'un suggestion.

Good choice. I have the same microwave on my boat. It has a VERY important feature: you have to push a button to unlatch and open the door. What happens with the more common "just pull the door open" type is -- a sudden surge can cause the food to hit the door from inside, opening the door and spilling the contents.
