Re: Bread Maker Aboard ?

So you bust me on amp-hour which when I use a/hr and discussing batteries I'll bet most knew I was talking about the capacity of the battery. You didn't touch on peukert's law which applies to batteries, more so for lead acid than lithium. Watt is the unit of work, as is horsepower, and the discussion was on breadmaker's consumption and batteries ability to supply the energy.

I'll remember not to offer up advise knowing there are syntax snipers in the bushes.

I think mlibkind is right on. Units are important. If you mess those up the credibility of your entire post is in question, especially since you were questioning the posts of others.

By the way, they are kw-hrs not kw/hrs.

You are also ignoring the conventional duty cycle of batteries from 80% to 50%, so 1/4 of a battery is a lot.

Peukert's law isn't relevant - it applies to charging the battery back up, not on drain.

Re: Bread Maker Aboard ?

Then you don't know Peukert's Law. It applies to rated capacity and current draw. The higher the current draw, the less the capacity of the battery. Peukert's law is as follows: C_p=Ikt

C_p = is the capacity according to Peukert, at a one-ampere discharge rate, expressed in A·h.
I = the discharge current, expressed in Amperes a.
k = the Peukert constant,
t = the time of discharge, expressed in hours h. The Peukert constant increases with age for any of the battery types above, but generally ranges from 1.05 - 1.15 for VRSLAB AGM batteries, 1.1-1.25 for Gel, and 1.2-1.6 for Flooded Batteries.

Of course much less than 1.05 for lithium and that is one of the many reasons I've gone to lithium. But to be sniped once by a guy that posts on an 8 month old thread is bad enough, but a follow up snipe from you is the reason I'm not too active here on CF anymore.

Your treatment is absolutely correct. Doesn't Peukert's Law also address the difference between discharge and charge? I know there is an algorithm ... if it isn't part of Peukert's Law what the heck is it? All my references are in storage.

Re: Bread Maker Aboard ?

Try "Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes" cookbook, which you can get on Amazon. No kneading bread, just mix the ingredients and put in the fridge. Grab a grapefruit size hunk fof refrigereated dogh, let sit a few minutes, and bake. Lasts up to 2 weeks. First saw a recipe from the book in Cruising World. Definitely woth trying

Peukert's Law is for battery DIScharge: the heavier a load the more the bank is drawn down.

Battery ACCEPTANCE relates to CHARGING only, when the bank gets closer to full it will accept less current at the set charging maximum voltage (14+V).

Re: Bread Maker Aboard ?

I bought an Oster in excellent condition from a thrift store for $5. Max capacity is a 2 lb loaf. I prefer to use it instead of the oven. It doesn't heat up the galley like the oven.

I have a bread maker aboard but only use it when we have shore power. Takes too much power or have to run gen set. Think about "Beer Bread". Easy to make and good.

Re: Bread Maker Aboard ?

There are different models of bread maker. I have one that does the whole routine and any interruption to power, the breadmaker will not continue the next stage.

I have another model which offers a user select mode for each stage of baking. Kneading or bake mode.

This way you can use inverter for the kneading and later start your genset for the "bake" mode.

Re: Bread Maker Aboard ?

The answer is to buy a Zojirushi bread machine. It will keep it's program status through power interruptions an it creates a very good, full size loaf. The machine that I am 100% sure of is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-BB-C...+bread+machine
but they have a better one and a smaller one with only 1 kneading paddle. Check them out. We also use just the dough programs for pizza dough or artisan breads that we bake in an oven.

Bread Maker Aboard ?

I've had a bread making machine / toaster oven since 99. I have considered it on the boat, but finding the bread mix boxes is increasingly difficult and room to say nothing of electrical draw, but if I could find the mixes, I might just bring it anyway. It's a great little toaster oven too.
