A primary essential of the central nervous system is Vitamin B group. Being water soluble, by and large, they must be replenished daily.
Alcohol absorbs/neutralises B Group vitamins. Voila! Drunkeness & headache.
Berocca or other BGroup in large doses usually prevents hangovers if taken with the grog.
And is a good treatment for hangovers.

The best way to avoid a hangover if you know that you are going out drinking is to stay hydrated and take vitamin B complex with a big glass of water before bed. It is amazingly effective. However, we all know that that problem is when you unexpectedly have too much, and/or mix red wine with cocktails and then the sun comes up and you want to die. As mentioned above Frenet Branca will set you right. Here is very useful recipe:
1 oz (30 ml) Dry Gin (Bombay Sapphire)
1 oz Sweet vermouth (Noilly Prat)
1 oz Frenet Branca
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake and strain into your favorite coffee mug. Drink it all down as quickly as possible and follow it with a big glass of water then go back to bed. The alcohol will help you back to sleep, and the botanicals in the Frenet Branca will increase appetite which is what you need: food and rest. Trust me, your all day nightmare will be reduced to an hour or two. It is magical.

Hardly offended. I've consumed WAY too much in my youth.

But at some age I realized that I really like Saterday morning without a headache. It's simply a cost/benefit thing. If I limit my drinks to just a few in the after noon I get only the upside and none of the down side. I've also learned that an empty stomach and slight dehydration make drinking much more "efficient."

As for cures, as much water as you can handle followed by more at the mid-night pee break helps.

How is Zyrtec very, very bad for you? I'm allergic to some pollen and have happily been taking Zyrtec and other allergy remedies in the summer for years.

Big greasy breakfast to soak up the impurities left in you. Plenty of water to drink prior to bed/during night.

I had better uses for mine than drinking it however.. I'd trade mine with the married guys who stayed on board in ports to stand my watches so I could enjoy the run ashore they could not afford..
Another RN trick before a session ashore was to have a couple of bread rolls stuffed full of cheese.. get the fat in the system before you abuse it..
