Baja California - San Evaristo, Jan 2024
Greetings,
Our sailing group from Colorado plans to charter for one week from La Paz in January 2024.
We have never chartered in Mexico before, although we are well acquainted with the Caribbean.
Our itinerary is
Puerto Balandra
Playa La Bonanza or Ensenada Grande
Isla San Francisco
Bahia Amortajada
San Evaristo
The cruising guide lists San Evaristo as a small fishing village where you can refuel and replenish food.
My question is whether anyone has experience with this or recommendations for us. From the above itinerary, might there be opportunities to buy fish from local fishermen?
My sense is that we should have food on board for all our needs, but will welcome any opportunity to buy local--especially fresh.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations/comments,
Anne Hammond

Re: Baja California - San Evaristo, Jan 2024
Please note that that village was greatly impacted by hurricane Norma. The road, which was bad on a good day was severely damaged, the residents are having to travel by panga to nearby towns for supplies as the road is being repaired. Things are getting better, but this may not be the best time to expect being able to reprovision there. News out of there from this week is that they are doing better and would like visitors to come, but the situation in terms of availability of food may not be good.
Things will continue to evolve. By January it may be completely different. If you’re in Facebook I recommend joining the seas of Cortez cruisers group for more real time updates.
You should not count on being able to buy anything, and just expect it as a happy surprise if you do. In our experience the last few years it’s been just luck to get anything from locals, there’s a lot of boats and a lot of demand.
Provision in la Paz and plan for everything you need, including (and especially) water, and enjoy your week.

Fuel in San Evaristo? Only by jerry cans from land-based gas station. Also, don't plan on reprovisioning there. Basically: Loreto and La Paz.
Watch out for Corumels in Isla San Francisco (and Ensenada Grande... Partida a little better)... (YES, corumels DO occur in the winter!!)
The ONLY cruising guide you need (and the best) is Blue Latitude Sea of Cortez (plus get its anchorage charts)

Thank you PNWSalmon and sv_pelagi for very good advice.
We do have Sea of Cortez (Blue Latitude) by Shawn Breeding and Heather Bansmer. It is an awesome guide.
I will join the Sea of Cortez Cruisers Facebook group.
Thanks!
Anne

Those are all good places to go. The availability of food is such that you dont need to provision for all your food needs. There are tiendas, small restaurants on the beach, local fishermen etc. at some of those anchorages. Be aware, Hurricane Norma sunk some Dream Yacht Charter boats. Check with them asap. We are in La Paz now if you need additional info.

Re: Baja California - San Evaristo, Jan 2024
Thank you Rich and Laura, S/V Tally Ho! I hope you are enjoying La Paz.
We are looking to provision fresh at
Mercado Municipal General Nicolás Bravo
in the historic city center, and to buy 25 10-liter jugs of purified water.
Any advice on transporting provisions and water from Mercado Municipal to Punta Prieta?
The website says open 6 am - 6 pm daily except Sunday, but wondering if that is accurate. If open, are all the stalls open?
Thanks for any info!

Punta Prieta? The power plant?
Perhaps you mean Marina Costa Brava? (just before Punta Prieta).
Have you checked whether Costa Brava supplies purified wated to boafs? Likely yes. (It'sthe priciest marina in La Paz area.) IF NOT, usually they will arrange water delivery to boat..
You will almost certainly want to do some shopping at a regular grocery supermarket for things besides vegetables and meat (in addition to the Mercado). A Mega or Aramburo or large Soriana store (or Soriana's "City Club", a bit like Costco and does "day memberships").
Ant taxi will take you (but not 10 garafon water bottles, 19l each)

Hi again,
This is all good information. Looks like you will be departing from Marina CostaBaja. (not Costa Brava) Lots of stores to provision, as listed above. Let any taxi driver know of your intention of provisioning and they will be happy to arrange a van or suitable transportation to and from downtown. The Mexican people are amazing and will be happy to help you. A friendly smile will go a long way!
