You can get hand grinders at any antique store for about $15, the best were made in Germany. You will never wear one out. Square little box thingy with a crank and a drawer that slides out with the goodies.

Turkish grinders can be found reasonably and work beautifully for coffee and spices. Usually they are brass, so you might want to keep one stored in a ziplock to retard tarnish.

French press or an old-school percolator. Auto-drip coffee is nasty anyway.

Nice. I have a plastic handheld on the boat which they have stopped manufacturing. It appears to have been to some degree modelled on that. It was made by an Italian kitchen ware company whose name escapes me. Should it ever wear out I will know how to replace it.

perculator, I like this better than the french press because there is no need for a seperate kettle to boil water. Plus the perculator allows you to make stronger coffee, yum

I have a Zassenhaus grinder, all wood with steel cutters and handle, that I have had for over thirty years. And yes, the coffee tastes much better from it. And the grinding of it slows down your morning nicely. You can still find these grinders in places where coffee is king, like Seattle SMSA. The metal ones are good, but do not have the flavor added factor that wooden grinders have. I am sure it is because the wood becomes saturated with coffee oils. A friend used to have a cast aluminum stop top espresso maker [not the two part one common everywhere, shown in a post above] which was one piece. I have never seen another anywhere. But that was the best stove top maker I have ever seen. Made wonderful espresso.

The Turkish thing is for grinding cardamon perhaps?

Turkish way ground coffee cannot be used for espresso though. Or at least I have never tried.

BTW Anybody takes cardamon?

The turkish grinder could be used to grind cardamon, or anything small enough to fit into the burrs. The screw top is usually adjustable so that you can grind your coffee beans finer or coarser, depending on how you choose to brew.

It is designed primarily as a coffee grinder.

This is a Melitta. Heat up your teakettle and pour the hot water over the grounds in the cone top filter holder. Transfer the java to a thermos and enjoy good hot coffee all day long. No power necessary. Used mine for 12 years and love it.

Because of this thread I looked into coffee makers. We have always ground coffee with a blade grinder and dripped it ashore. On the boat I use a DC blade grinder and a percolator. I believe grinding coffee is the first major improvement anyone can make. After reading stuff here and on other threads I purchased a Frieding double walled stainless steel French press and a Bodum Bistro burr grinder. Wow! The coffee is so much better than either method we had used. It's fuller, richer. It's like drinking chocolate. Now all I need is a hand grinder for the boat.

Wallmart now has a 16 cup perculator in camoing section for 11 bucks.
i stil have my ten cup i bought off e-bay for five. remember to clip it on stove rack otherwise it goes flying acrss cabin
