Re: Any Coffee Drinkers ?
I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned the Aero-Press. (Look it up on Amazon) Light weight, dead simple to use, all plastic construction and absolutely makes the best coffee around. I'm on my second one and use it at least twice every day for the past three years! All the other coffee makers were given away.

Yep. Never trust the French!

Try the toy in the center. It is of the Spanish / Italian pattern. I find the Italian better and the earthware (center) best. No grounds getting through. But the taste is different from the French gadget - so maybe not what your admiral will like either.

We too have used a Melita filter for many many years. It sits on the gimbaled stove without spilling or falling off in all kinds of weather. Pouring boiling water into it is tricky however.
We buy whole beans, dark roasted, grind them daily with an electric grinder. We've had many fun adventures trying to find coffee beans in third world countries, and never failed.
And even though we rarely find Starbucks beans, and often don't want to pay the price for them, we do, unfailingly, drink from our Starbucks coffee cups, as befits a Seattle based boat.

You must have the wrong brand. Some have a filter that is too coarse.
Try Bodum.

Re: Any Coffee Drinkers ?
The grounds get into the coffee....has she ever considered pouring the press coffee through a better filter? One of the gold flashed "permanent" filters? Or buying a piece of fine stainless screening (try Small Parts Co., recently acquired by Amazon) to replace the coarse screening in the french press?
I've brewed "ranch coffee" boiled in a pot over a campfire, and even in that, with no filters, you CAN make all the grounds settle down and get a decent cup of coffee.
Obviously you are being put to the test, a good spouse would take are of these things for her. <VBG>

Re: Any Coffee Drinkers ?
You are right,hellosailor,... A dash of cold water settles the grounds. And use a coarser grind....bye the bye though, those gold screens aren't as good as the paper filters but hey-that sediment won't hurt you! I mean, if you need a boost, why bother with the water? Just eat the beans, they are (seriously) good and, at the least, a really good indication of the taste and freshness of the roasted coffee beans you are buying.
Funny that all the methods mentioned really do make coffee from the same bean taste different, but can all be good.

You don't have to filter press coffee, it is a filter.

I think your friends are using it wrong or something. A press is an upside down filter. I've been using them for years and never had grounds in my coffee.

Why bother with upgrading the french press when the Melita is so hassle free and makes a great cup of coffee? And there's no cleaing involved. The filter and the coffee grounds just go into the trash after the coffee is made.
As for range coffee, it sucks, even with some sprigs of spruce thrown in. Been there, done that. If a cowboy makes range coffee, it means that his horse stepped on the coffee pot.

Re: Any Coffee Drinkers ?
"starbuckks beans arent allthat great"
A dark roast is a dark roast. Starchucks? That's just burnt coffee. Gobs of cream and sugar turn it into some kinda coffee candy, but that's just still burnt coffee beneath it all.
When they brought out their "new" Pike's blend they said it was less roasted...still just tastedlike weaker burnt coffee to me. Which probably explains why they well so many fancy schmancy drinks, but not so much black coffee.
They'll give a free cup to anyone who comes in and says they voted on election day. And I'll still go down the block and buy my coffee from someone who doesn't burn the beans.

Yes. The wrong type of grind....
FP's require a good (consistent) course grind. Any of the newer ceramic manual grinders will give you complete control of the grind size, and are always consistent. Unlike almost every electric grinder on the market short of commercial grade grinders...
