Yacht Founders off Washington coast

On Saturday May 7 at around 7am local time, the 45 metre Benetti yacht Domani was disabled 45 miles off the coast of Grays Harbor, Washington.

The US Coast Guard reports the cause of the incident to be flooding of the beach club, which occurred as a result of the crew being unable to close the transom door.

Great Coast Guard. Scrolling down I read up on the Mulder. They make amazing aluminum boats. I was expecting something as pretty as the Favourite 1700

Putting the boat in forward wouldn't have moved the water out? It does when I open the transom flaps on my dinghy.

seems like the area exposed by the open transom door would have been somewhat weather and water proof? did somebody screw up

On many many yachts the transom door is the weather seal so , no, they often expose the interior

Re: Yacht Founders off Washington coast

Unless specifically a design exception, all codes require these kinds of door installations to have a watertight bulkhead at the forward part of the compartment. The compartment can be fully flooded in the event of door failure.

It will be interesting to learn how the door became open at sea in the first place. Codes prevent use of the door in open waters AND there is a multiple sequence that must be followed to open the door.
