Re: News Flash, Coast Guard to suspend SF boat racing?

Two upcoming races cancelled, don't know which ones yet. OYRA Duxship Race - April 28th, 2012 Late in the day on April 25th we were informed by the US Coast Guard Captain of the Port that all offshore marine event permits were being temporarily suspended.

Don't know the other yet.

The TV news hook was for the 10:00 PM news.

The land of the free ehh, and you need " permits" to race. I ll take me socialist Europe anyday, no one would dream of trying that here. How can a "rescue " agency issue race permits what's the legislative basis.

Re: News Flash, Coast Guard to suspend SF boat racing?

Normaly I would jump all over goboatingnow, But in this instance I have to agree with him !! LOL why do the CG have the right to cancel a race or have anything to do with a race in the first place ?? Now I could see them saying they would not supply any rescue services if they were needed. But if some body wants to race another boat who has the right to say they can't !! Sounds to much like Big Brother to me !!

B&C... you must remember this is the Bay Area where there are rules for how short you can mow your lawn. I lived there back in the 80's and I don't recognize the place now. I avoid CA and San Francisco in particular because of the Big Brother oversight on everything you do and their uberliberal approach to controlling your life. It will be interesting to see how the city reacts to the America Cup races. Capt Phil

Re: USCG suspends permits for Ocean Races

Last time I heard of a Coastie cancelling a single race, a couple of hundred angry constituents called up their local politicians and that Coastie got ROASTED by his superior. And justifiably so.

What, ocean racing will have to be like street racing now, secret meet-ups and raves so voters who have already invested big bucks in this year's racing are supposed to just go home?

One has to wonder if Captain Stowe just ended her career. A safety review may have merit, but hitting the scram button when so many presumably informed sailors have invested so much...What the hell was she thinking?!

probably an excercise in CYA (for self and CG) by being seen to be "doing something". Plus a bit of empire building.

And as they have more guns (and the backing of the State) they can do WTF they want, and by firing first they have taken the initiative - which means can force folks to do whatever the USCG wants.

The only risk is that she annoys someone with more political mojo than her.

The USA, a far away country of which we know little...........

.....still, not to late to apologise for that tea thing and come back into the fold .

Funny how Americans use the term liberal, over here it's means a live and let live approach. ( ie light touch )

If I was the race organisers I would defy that ordinance. Any French man will give you pointers on instant civil disobedience

Actually SCUBA diving is a self regulated sport!!! They have managed to keep the government pretty much out of it by self imposed requirements for filling tanks, mixing gases, and cave diving.

That is one reason why the main SAR service in UK (The RNLI) is a charitable concern, and not run by the government.

How closely does race safety equipment compliance get to USCG list.
