55-60 is not bad by my standards.

I found flattish / tall staysails and flattened out reefed mains the best alternative to a staysail combined with some donkey power. (But as you said you donkey was not operational.)

I do not mean very tall, but not 1:1 either.

BTW Very nice upwind sails in a hull not optimized for tight upwind work seem to deliver no advantage and may (IMHO) actually be worse than little fuller sails that are in synch with the specific hull shape.
