U.S. Warship Just Collided With a Tugboat in Japanese Waters, or Misleading Report

Tugboat reportedly lost power. IMO this is nothing at all like the two fatality & incompetence collisions or even the grounding.

If tugboat lost power and scraped some paint in the harbor - who cares.

Have a link?
General public has no understanding and often doesn’t care, plus there are many news agencies that have an agenda, some the military can do no wrong, they are all hero’s, to others they are incompetent fools that just waste money that could better be spent elsewhere.

I guess what I am saying is if your US Navy. You are what we used to call in the fish bowl, meaning your every move is being watched.

The tug lost power and drifted into the USS benfold.

The title should read: Tugboat loses power, collides with US Warship.

Exactly !

Should we add “Navy orders paint following collision at 2 full knots”? You’ll see worse in your marina this weekend.

Nope, ABC news is apparently into Navy bashing.
You make up your own mind as to why.

I suspect it is clickbait to sell ads as the reason.

so what is the problem with us navy?

underfunded, low moral, anything else ?

they should be on watch and intercept this boat before impact.

the ship was likely being towed away from the pier to get underway when the tug lost power and inertia did the rest. No time to do anything evasive. ( especially when still leashed to the tug.) Jmho.

For sensationalism and to attract viewers, usually of the lowest common denominator.

I'm skeptical of all news but ABC may be the worst. Many years ago when I was flying ultralights ABC 20/20 did a story presenting ultralights in general and specifically the same model I flew, a canard design, as death traps.

They showed a video of a local news guy, a "trained pilot" flying the plane, the wings folded, it crashed and he died so they are all cheaply built toys that aren't safe to leave the ground.

I got to see the full, original video. It had been very selectively edited leaving out the parts where the news guy confessed he had never been in the plane before, had never flown a canard design before, where he was told by the instructor to do nothing but taxi in a circle. Instead he took off, panicked, over-corrected the pitch, went into oscillation over-stressed the air frame and crashed. But that story wasn't exciting enough so ABC completely fabricated a "better" story from the bits.

After seeing that my faith in TV news was pretty much gone.

I would whip out my handy, aluminum, extendable boat hook and fend it off.

You’ll want that solid oak boathook with the bronze fittings for this job !

Serious I bet one tugboat bumps one ship every single day with so many harbors around the world. There’s no security component here because the tug a known friendly vessel and most likely supposed to be near the ship.

If there was a security threat very few tugs will hold up against this:

Crikeys... tugboats put their bows against the sides of ships and push deliberately on a regular and intentional basis. That is one of their means of doing their jobs.

This was not deliberate, apparently, but surely not a big deal. Must have been a slow news day...
