Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

I've crossed those NSW bars several times and will be doing so again soon. They always instil respect, although some more so than others. I've always found Swansea and Camden Haven to be reasonably straightforward. However, the Clarence and Ballina bars are more intimidating and I've never been game (or desperate) enough to cross the Tweed Heads bar or the one at South West Rocks.
Since the Begonia incident, I've resolved to start studying the bar cameras and comparing what I see with swell, waves and tides to get a better feel for them. Knowledge seems to be key to keeping safe.

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

We came into Port Stephens at 4-30 AM last Saturday morning in 2 to 3 metre following waves and pouring rain, Surfing waves.
Couldnt see any thing,
Tide or current was running sideways, It was about half tide,
I just followed the Markers on the GPS, With great difficulty, It was bouncing all over the place,
I couldnt see the channel Lights clearly,
Tied up at a Pink Mooring ball at 5-30 AM, Dutchmans beach,

I had just done 5 hours hand steering in 40 knot winds and very high choppy seas,
Coming up from Cronulla, We were out 20 Nmiles, But I changed course and came in closer to shore which reduced the size of the waves we were in,
But that added about 15 or 20 miles extra to the journey, Approximately, About 3 or 4 hours,
We were doing 11 knots at one stage, Motoring and half the Genoa up,

I wasnt going to sit out there and wait for the weather to improve,
The hand steering was because the Autopliot and GPS just couldnt keep up with the violent course changes we were encountering,

Cheers, Brian,

Re: Tweed Heads, Australia bar

here is my bit of experience with Clarence.

We spent quite a bit of time there and tide is outgoing when small range when rising tide and big range before for outgoing. And out current is still strong and waves steeper during whole rising tide. Here is example when tide refuses to turn to incoming. Worth thinking about it when planning to enter bar . When recent floods, tide remains outgoing for much larger incoming tides.

Dear lord!

I hope I never find myself on such a scary situation! It must have been beyond frightening...

Cheers,

Yup. There's a lot of power in wave action!

Very lucky escape.
That is exactly correct. And I can confirm he only had port side motor and rudders were locked to starboard.

He did great work to not end up on Duran ah beach.

I was the bloke who threw a tow line to him...

I suggest you start a new thread with that question. Might get a better result.
