Also, any tug I've been on has a couple of big ol' hatchets readily accessible on deck. Not sure they had time or crew available to use one, but I know it's easy to forget you have that option in a situation like that. I had to give the order to cut a tow line once, and got a stunned look of disbelief. I've also had to cut a dock line. Now I always include that procedure in any pre-underway briefing if towing might be involved. When you need to do it, you need to do it fast!

Once that small tug was on the frd headline and the pilot asked the big red tug on the stern line to give a 'double ring full ahead' I think it was all over for the little tugboat . I reckon the pilot had forgotten that it was there - maybe he was feeling a bit frazzled.

I am pretty sure the Pilot would not be in command at that time
Always, Pilot's Advice, Captain's Orders

I don't think I suggested that he was, however he was still more likely to be the one conversing with the tugs. The CB's CO's day wasn't exactly going all that well either and he may have been starting to consider other career paths - his one in the Armada was no longer looking very bright.
Why had he agreed to take the ship through the bridge with the tide?
