Storm Tactics

As a former owner of a Leopard Catamaran I was interested in the New York Time photo by Johnny Milano of the leopard riding out Dorian in Carolinas. The Article's title is "Hurricane Dorian Becomes a Carolina Problem With a Fierce Lashing of the Coast".
Do people really find it safer to ride out the storm by heading out into open ocean or open bay rather than just tying the boat down on a dock somewhere. Wondering what the thinking is here? Sounds sketchy to head out to be safe. Thoughts?

^^^

The short answer is to find a mangrove creek to hide out in. But the long answer has to do with getting out of the hurricane zone, and if you cannot, then try and find a good mangrove creek. But you do not want to leave the boat unattended there, so there are risks. As there are also risks in marinas. The big lesson is to carefully prepare the boat, reducing windage as much as possible. And, if you are of the praying kind, pray a lot, for the wellbeing of those in the zone.

Re: Storm Tactics

My dad did that once. Years ago in his Gulfstar 43' Trawler, Intrepid.

He was in Mystic, Connecticut at the time, so as the hurricane made its way up the East Coast, went up the Mystic River as far as he could, and dodged around a small penninsula which afforded a measure of protection. He didn't anchor, just ran the engines and manoeuvred the boat as the storm came through.

He loved that boat! So much so, the day after he was killed in a car accident, we got a call from the marina: the boat had sunk.

Re: Storm Tactics

Yup. It's 20 years ago now, but I still can't believe it.

Fortunately, the boat was in a (relatively) shallow slip, so we were able to fix the blown thru-hull, re-float the boat and clean, clean, clean her for sale.

She's still out there somewhere, travelling with her new owners.
