Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

Woo-hoo! What a nice Easter surprise for all those hard-working salvors and crew!

Here's the GCaptain article:
Salvage Team Frees Ever Forward
https://gcaptain.com/salvage-team-fr...containership/

She was towed South and now anchored just off of Annapolis for a deep-water hull survey.

Nobody knows why she was towed the whole way there, as her engines were running during the disodging attempt (see black smoke in some pics). Perhaps it speaks to whatever may have caused the grounding? Possibly no steerage...?

Anyway, happy resolution. Thanks MAlbert.

Maybe they thought it best that someone else drive for now.

From ABC News:
“Ever Forward” cargo ship freed
The 130-ton Ever Forward cargo ship that has been mired in the mud of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland for more than a month was dislodged and refloated early Sunday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 1,095-foot cargo ship, which ran aground in shallow water 36 days ago, was yanked from a mound of mud by two pulling barges and six tugboats working in tandem around 7 a.m., the Coast Guard said.

Sounds more like an airship than a cargo ship given those figures - why didn't they just top up her gas aka helium tanks and fly her out?
But wait! there's more!
' was being towed by five tugboats to a ship parking area '

Who on earth writes and proof reads this stuff??

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

I have read about 'pulling barges' in the various stories but not actually seen photos of the re-floating. What are pulling barges and why would they be used rather than tugs?

Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

Pulling barges have massive anchors and windlasses that can generate much more bollard pull than a tugboat. So they had two of these attached to the stern of the ship which ultimately were successful.
This YouTube channel has a series of videos on the incident and salvage tactics.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

Thanks malbert73, that makes perfect sense as a tool to help in this situation. I had watched Sal's most recent video which had not footage of the successful pull and I don't think the other attempts were using a pulling barge that I had noticed.

Thanks again,
Dan

I picture the editor chastising the journalist for using "technical jargon" like the word "anchorage" in a general news article.

Or, even more likely, the journalist raising their hand at the press briefing to ask what it means, and some poor spokesperson trying to explain it to the dolt.

Yeah, our standards are pretty low in journalism, editing and the general public.

The ironic part is that after removing the 507 containers to lighten the load, they reportedly had to then add ballast to get under the Bay Bridge.

Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

Found raw drone footage of the ship being pulled off, though it appears to start after the pulling barges are done pulling it aft, so stern is in deep water and salvage tugs are pulling bow over into channel.
You can see the anchored pulling barges astern. 48 min with no sound but still interesting.

I hate container ships. They are constantly losing containers at sea. Which creates hazards to navigation as well as environmental hazards
