Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
Full moon was yesterday. Tides at Baltimore are not big:
Baltimore (Fort McHenry), MD Tides :: MarineWeather.nethttps://marineweather.net › tide › baltimore-fort-mchen...
Date Time Feet Tide
Wed Mar 16 6:47pm 1.21 ft High Tide
Thu Mar 17 1:18am 0.18 ft Low Tide
Thu Mar 17 6:44am 1.09 ft High Tide
Any lighters they bring alongside to offload containers may ground out too. They may have to get suction dredges to get her loose enough to pull off. Then you get into possible structural problems if different parts of the hull aren't supported evenly. Helicopters would be quick, but really expensive. How many containers would they need to remove to lighten her enough to get off? 500? 1000? 2000? She can carry about 5000 forty-foot trailerloads, but some were offloaded in Baltimore already.

From the video above, about 12000 containers.

Marine Traffic puts her carrying capacity at 11850 TEU - a bit under 12,000 twenty-foot containers. I used 40 foot containers and rounded down for my example.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
I wonder if Safe Harbor will buy it and turn it into a high-priced marina?

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
As MDC predicted, now that the experts have been aboard, looks like the EverForward will be there for some time - and need off-loading to refloat...

This isn't going to help supply line issues.

Ships like this usually sail trimmed a metre or two by the stern, so the bow draught marks won't indicate maximum draught.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
Container ships are a curse upon the Oceans. Thousands of container are lost overboard every year. The owners of the containers reap huge insurance payments. Anytime I see a container ship with containers stack more than three high above the main deck. I figure some of those containers are going to end up in the ocean. Which is sad

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
No one has mentioned that she was under the command of a pilot as was the other EVER..... which grounded in the Suez Canal. Can't blame the company, but glad they have good insurance and deep pockets.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
According to AIS data from MarineTraffic.com, she's still in the same spot as yesterday, and this is after an all-out effort last evening at high-tide with 5 tugs and a dredge.

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
Most areas with pilotage the pilot is not in command, the master is. Panama Canal is one exception, is this area another?

As is typical of shipping companies, the “ EVER FORWARD” is likely a “one-ship company”, whose only asset, of any value, is the vessel, so Evergreen Marine Corp’s deep pockets won’t play into this story.
The insurance company’s deep pockets will, however, be at play.
One Ship Company ➥ One Ship Company

Re: Sistership EVER FORWARD Run Aground in the Chesapeake
I got to test-drive my friend's Tesla Model 3 on the weekend. It has this display that shows the vehicle in its lane, with lines, and alerts when one strays out of it. I believe the Tesla even has the ability to hold its lane automatically.
My point being that if this ability exists on a $40k automobile, surely it's possible to have sufficient onboard alerts to keep a zillion-dollar megaship in a channel. This could possibly even be done with OpenCPN running on a tablet carried by the pilot, ffs...
