I believe you may have had the right idea initially and I inadvertently confused you. That
knot (taught line hitch, midshipman’s hitch, riggers hitch) is an adjustable hitch that can be slid back and forth to add tension or give slack to the system.
These hitches and their slight variations have been around for a long time and go by a number of different names as Don also pointed out.
