Re: Sailboat falls of trailer on the 401 (Highway in Canada)

Europeans can drive 8 hours, and be in a whole new Country.
Americans can drive 8 hours, and be in a whole new State.
Canadians can drive 8 hours, and still be stuck in the same spot, on the 401.

Toronto is at least a 1 hour drive from Toronto, on the 401.

Re: Sailboat falls of trailer on the 401 (Highway in Canada)

Well I would say since I've shipped a lot of things but never a sailboat for the way that they are situated on a trailer now I've seen people hauling sailboats and the way they're set up and being on a Canadian highway which it did look pretty smooth but you know how they might be a little buckle in the road and it might not be strapped down properly and up in the way she goes, who knows sure would have been need to be a fly on the dash then to see what was going on, but usually when loads are strapped down properly things like that don't happen

Re: Sailboat falls of trailer on the 401 (Highway in Canada)

Something similar happened to me, broke my heart - and the boat. I had a trailer custom made for a boat I'd just bought.

After a six week refit the boat was placed on the trailer for transport to its new home. First bend outside the marina the trailer support arms collapsed, the boat fell off the trailer and was smashed (6 foot fin keel creates a long drop).

I subsequently found out that the same thing had happened to others. The trailer manufacturer was sued by my insurance company and lost his house over it. I suffered no financial losses - but inside I was a mess.

Moral of the story - anything critical then use a reputable supplier.

I wonder why they used that little bitty truck to lift such a big, heavy boat?

You are kidding right? From the photo I can only see two straps. So if one strap fails you have lost 50 percent of your tie downs. You have excessive trailer overhang at the rear. The distance from the trailer lights to the end of the trailer load is excessive and is not legal for transport in the USA.

It's unstable and fishtails. You can protect yourself by putting your boat on the trailer, and then winching it forward or aft until it balances on the wheels. Mark that spot (it's your CG) and always make sure that it is in front of the axle when you tie the boat down.
Great Advice
