This is a cruising forum, not a commercial salvage forum. I suspect that almost everyone, even the commercial folk when they are wearing their cruising hats, are not even thinking salvage if they come across another vessel where the vessel or crew may be in distress. This is particularly true if it is another pleasure vessel/cruising vessel/yacht, or dinghy. Maybe a large commercial fishing boat, but probably not even then until later, and maybe never for either. I will not go into the standard warnings about standard contracts, Lloyds, and the like if the other guy is operating his or her commercial vessel and you are nearing the rocks because the engine failed and you are beyond your ability to recover. Still, I'll bet no salvage claim nine times out of ten from a fellow cruiser, with #10 a maybe, but if it is commercial 10 out of 10, but not a gouge. I'd love to read contrary vies from the commercial people, and the venal oafs who claim to be cruisers who would make a salvage claim, unless the vessel was abandoned and no owner of family was ever found.
You should have read the "venal oaf"'s (your words, not mine ) post #7!

"Well, actually it is a demand, because if ship is unhelmed then the approaching ship that is under command can take it for their own possession as salvage, so if the skipper of the ghost ship is present he MUST appear and demonstrate command, otherwise the ship may be put in tow and the owner will lose it. (note that the (ex-?)owner might be different than the skipper)

My question is what is the proper and legal way to demand the captain appear before seizing the ship for salvage. "

I think this thread has run its course.

Good day to one and all.
