Re: Proper way to use mooring ball?

Since the hurricane hole here has moorings We have done some more sleuthing on local experience during hurricanes. Mostly good outcomes but one story gave me some ideas. The moorings have a large pennant with galvanized shackle attached to chain a couple feet below the ball. The failure occurred in the pennant a couple feet from the chain. My story is that the line chaffed on the sharp shells attached to the float. I keep my float free of growth but you can be sure I will be extra vigilant now.

These are a couple of ball covers I made back when we were in Chicago a few years back. The one on the right I made using a strip of one of those huge floating swim mats some powerboating folks carry. I found that in a dumpster at the boatyard. It was a bit nasty/moldy which was why it was thrown away but made a good pad for the cover. The other is one I made for a friend using noodles since I had only cut enough from the swim pad to make one cover.

The blue barrel is a standard barrel that I bought for $10 from an oil change place. It originally had antifreeze in it. I simply cut it in half with a sawzall. Cover just slips on over the mooring ball before the shackle and bridle is attached. There is a slot at the top for the eye of the ball to poke through.

Re: Proper way to use mooring ball?

I have a related question so I'm hoping to piggy back off this thread:

I too am on a mooring with a pendant, but there is no thimble or anything on the eye. I'm currently running a dock line out to the eye and back through the chocks and then tying that line to my cleat. I then repeat this process through the other chock (I only have one bow cleat).

With a tropical storm coming up, I am concerned about the chafe on the line and pendant. Is there a better way?

Re: Proper way to use mooring ball?

Deblen,

My question (if your post was directed at me) is about how to secure the boat to the existing pendant. The post you linked seems to be more about how to secure the pendant to the mooring ball.

I added my link for the benefit of all on this thread.
