People Circumnavigate in Bathtubs

People circumnavigate in bathtubs! We see that sentence occasionally here on Cruiser's Forum.

Of course we really shouldn't take it literally - or should we?

Ran into this fellow on Martinique. Not quite a bathtub. Only 4 meters (13 feet) long.
Circumnavigating. And just to make sure you all realize he isn't kidding - this is his 2nd!!! circumnavigation in this little boat.

He does cheat - he gets it trailered across Panama - but he does sail south round Cape Hope

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: People Circumnavigate in Bathtubs

I was able to find a short article about him. It struck me as a bit sad. After completing his first circumnavigation, he had spent his savings, didn't have a job, and didn't seem to find anything to do. He did write a book but the income was very little. He couldn't afford to build another boat. So he went back to sea. Perhaps this is what he wanted and he's happy. I hope so.

Re: People Circumnavigate in Bathtubs

I live near Cape town but boat around Seychelles. For good reasons.

The balls on this guy are huge. Our coast is brutal. Very few safe natural safe havens besides the main cities. The ocean here is very powerful, as in it snaps bulk carriers. In that little thing, it must be an interesting chapter in his book unless he literally hugged the coast within 3 miles.

Salute to his skill and fortitude!

Re: People Circumnavigate in Bathtubs

My comment may not apply to this bathtub, but I am tired of people trying to make a media name for themselves by being the oldest, youngest, smallest boat, etc. to navigate the high seas. Just rent a barrel and go over the Iguazu Falls.

Is he a 'Media' name.. if so what is it, I'd like a better look outside and inside the boat..

Sounds like he got lucky once, so he is trying his luck again. It just takes that one wave, or that one log, or that one thing to break off and the trip ends. Wishing him good luck though.

Re: People Circumnavigate in Bathtubs

I am surprised any educated sailor can be surprised. This is Yann Quenet.

https://taveacbaluchon.blogspot.com/

Not to have heard about him is like not to know what the Flying Dutchman is or not to know how to CORRECTLY tie a bowline.

The boat is not a tub, he designed it, he built it, he sailed it round the world. It may as well be the best small cruising boat ever built. (With accent on *small*).

As we like to repeat in the small boat sailing community : "The world is your tub".

Wouldn't take long, Phil!

One time we saw the smallest sailboat to circumnavigate, 11'10" LOA. We saw it hanging from the roof in a maritime museum. Here's a link to the guy who did it--Serge Testa: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serge_Testa#See_also

In any other boat too.

Size is not a safety factor. Size IS a comfort factor.

Technically, it is easier to build a small and tough object that it is to build a big and tough object.

Re: People Circumnavigate in Bathtubs

reminds me : when this brave guy set off, he did so knowing what is ahead and with tools to tell him where he and what lies ahead.

Spare a thought for the sailors of 1300’s : set off not knowing whether need provisions for a week, for 6 months or until they fell off earth.

Sorry mate.. complete dork here..
I have someone read everything for me, then dictate my answers.

PS: isn't a bow line something that fastens the front of the boat to the dock.. criss-cross lashing on the cleats.???

Kinda like how a toy car can hit a wall at a scale speed of 500 mph and be just fine. He could probably hit a shipping container at speed and just kinda bounce off while the same situation might hole one of us.

Yes. Many things for it.

Not last that it is actually affordable too. He IS sailing, not sitting in his office dreaming of retiring one day.

The challenge, in my eye, is the comfort. But I never hear Yann get truly unhappy about this either. I sometimes think his hull form is simply so much better (then what I have here). I do remember sailing my Opti in total comfort. But I cannot recall one comfortable downwind passage in our boat.

Think of all those idiots on the slopes, with their stupid rucksacks ... while the smarter of the human crowd pass high above them, in heated gondola lifts ...

And yet. I remember my climbing days as nothing but ecstatic joy. Never cared much about those in the gondolas. We all ended up on the peak too. Actually.
