Navigating a too tall sailboat under a bridge

Very clever method of navigating a too high of an air draft sailboat under a bridge.

Yup, that worked a treat! Wouldn't work with our boat, though.

They've been doing this near Indiantown for about 30 years.

Instead of having the boat go under the road or rail bridge, an alternative is to make the roadway go under the water bridge.

Hey, whatever floats one's boat.

What happens when he wants to go through the other way? Does the current run different directions with the tide, or is it a river, and he's stuck downstream?

Yup, have used "Billy the boat tipper" many times on our trips between Texas and the Bahamas.

Billy, rest in peace.

Sadly, I am not aware of anyone who has taken over Billy's function. The place to check on whether there is a "replacement" is to call the Indiantown Marina-- it is the closest marina to the RR bridge.

BTW, the Corp of Engineers publishes a daily report of the Lake depth and bridge clearance: https://w3.saj.usace.army.mil/h2o/reports/r-oke.html

It is the end of the dry season here, so water depth is low (5.13') and bridge clearance is high (52.25').

I did the same in a Contender to avoid a water spout. Just laid her down and sat on the side while all hell let loose around me. No problem.

Not just a bridge.

You can also get off a grounding by tilting (some) boats.
