Re: Lazy Bag as storm main sail

In addition to the lack of proper shape, the attachment points of a lazy bag (slides, straps, lines) are not really optimized for sailing in storm force winds, the cloth may do ok but it will easily tear off the boom in those conditions.

Why do you feel this is a non-starter? Seems to me that for those of us that do not have an inner or baby forestay (and no way to rig one) that this is a potential answer
Mainly centre of effort too far frd.
My boat didn't have an inner forestay as built, it has one now ( last 30 plus years).
How big is your 'gale sail'? My storm jib of last resort is 50 sq ft on a 39 foot boat.

Re: Lazy Bag as storm main sail

Where the SC of your storm sail is will depend on how you want to go thru the storm.

Most of the time a small part of the genoa furled out makes an excellent downwind storm sail. Especially when supported on the spinnaker pole.

Upwind, a storm jib alone, also one on the inner stay, may blow you off too far. Hence a storm main, a trysail, or some alt method is required.

I think only proper (designed, not converted) will go upwind well under a storm jib on an inner stay.
