inner forestay

Has anyone used a block and tackle set up for a removable inner forestay rather than some like a Highfield lever? Something made of Dyneema possibly. I have a small (30') ketch.

We use a 2:1 halyard and a size 53 winch to tension a Dyneema inner forestay on our 54’ catamaran. With about 2000kg load at the winch it gets the stay tight enough. On your boat a 4:1 purchase could work and would only need about half a foot of travel.

The benefit of a Highfield lever (or this alternative https://swageturn.com/shop/hook-lever/) is that it is quick and easy to set a particular tension. If you don’t have a lot of space it can be useful.

Re: inner forestay

not really any problem..bit like tensioning a running backstay. you're probably best to lead it to a winch somewhere, with a suitable rope clutch. how much purchase you need will depend on what size winch you have available.

if no winch, you could be looking at 10:1 or more to get enough load on it.

cheers,

inner forestay

I have a 3:1 purchase with dyneema at the bottom of the steel inner forestay which I pre-tension with my hands before tensioning the backstay. Works great on my 37’ boat.

I imagine that a windlass with a capstan would work as the winch to tighten a removable inner forestay. It is an option I've thought of for my next boat. Any real experience doing that?

I tighten up my flying staysail with the rope drum on the windlass. It works great. You just have to have a fair lead to it, and in my case I pop the chain out of the gypsy on the other side so it can freewheel. You have to make sure the anchor can't just go out with a rush when you do that.

Re: inner forestay

I use a quick release shackle, bottlescrew holding a ss stay. Works well and easy enough to uncouple when switching from hanked on working jib to furler genoa.

I’m fortunate that Moonbeam came with one of these.
The luxury version of a high field lever.

Without that a turnbuckle (my previous boat) or tensioning with a winch then lashing would work very well.
