Help from experience in the Pacific

I’ve been sailing in the Caribbean and South America for 10 years on a 44’ cat with a 24’ beam.

We are upgrading to a Sun Reef 70’ power cat with a 37’ beam.

The Question is as a live aboard in the Pacific Islands is there sufficient haul out facilities for this beam?

Obviously there are ships transporting goods to each of these islands that have large beams…. But ?

Any responses please only about this issue of Haul out…. Other aspects have been considered. Looking for practical knowledge from well experienced people.

Really appreciate any help.

Re: Help from experience in the Pacific

Welcome to the forum, Caeles, even though it has been 11 years since your join date.

I have no experience within that part of the world. Forum members who do may still not have direct experience with the issue, since your new boat is an outlier on cruising size boats.

That said, it sounds to me that you are switching from travel hoists to rails as a way of getting your boat out of the water. A travel hoist big enough to accomodate a 37' beam would be a monster. Rails would have no problem at all. So, what yards in that part of the world can slide a boat, or a small ship, out of the water?

I believe the Bay of Islands Marina in Opua can handle it. Their website states 73' and 60 metric tons but does not mention beam. You would need to call them. There may be more options around Auckland. No idea about Australia, but someplace there could probably handle it.

I doubt any of the islands could handle it.

There won't be any facilities between Panama and NZ or Australia. Not sure about Indonesia - you might find something there. Singapore yes.

As noted above you probably need to be asking shipping companies where they can get into dry dock

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

I think this is about it.

In SoPac islands, Vuda Marine is the largest I know, limited to 19' beam.

I can't think of a lift anywhere that big. BUT as Carsten said, a drydock may be more available. Navies can be sympathetic and allow use of a drydock. That said, the only SoPac island location that might have a drydock is Port Moresby. I do know that a number of larger vessels (e.g., patrol boats) go back to AUS for refit.

I have seen big cats with wide beams pulled out using a semi trailer trailer under the bridge deck in Queensland.

Re: Help from experience in the Pacific

Suggest to OP to be more precise with 'Pacific Islands'. The Pacific covers a third of the world, it is immense, there are over 25,000 islands and some 35 countries.

Plenty of haulouts for big fishing vessels. Weight is probably more relevant than size.

Marsden caove in NZ has a trailer that would probably handle it.
