Fun Thread - Best Sailing Quotes
I want to hear some of the best quotes about sailors and seamanship.
I'll start this off.
"The floor of the ocean is paved with the bones of optimists."
I am trying to remember another one - if anyone knows it please correct this and finish it off ; "there are three types of sailors: novices, pessimists and dead"
Let's see what good quotes this community has!

"A man who is not afraid of the sea will soon be drowned." said the old fisherman from the Blasket Islands. "But we do be afraid of the sea...and we do only be drowned now and again." Irish playwright J.M.Synge
Had this taped over my chart table for years.

A Harwich pilot who taught me how to sail told me "there are only two types of people who stand in the companionway: skippers and a***holes".

That remark would be in reference to the companionintheway.
Albeit they can be put to good use when you are tending to things in the cockpit; they are the go to person when you say: "Here, hold my beer!"

Re: Fun Thread - Best Sailing Quotes
There are many old sailors and there are many brave sailors. But there are few old brave sailors.

Re: Fun Thread - Best Sailing Quotes
there are so many, but some of my favourites are by sir francis chichester ;
"Any damn fool can navigate the world sober. It takes a really good sailor to do it drunk. ..."
"If anything terrifies me, I must try to conquer it..."
"To the question, "When were your spirits at the lowest ebb?" the obvious answer seemed to be, "When the gin gave out."
cheers
