El Faro Black Box recovered August 2016

I wondered about the current status of the investigation into the loss of the El Faro. A quick search yielded this news report and good short news video.

On the video one can see the Black Box or voyage recorder on the bottom and hear the last recorded communication by phone with the Captain as he described his ships condition (loss of power, hull breach, water in three compartments).

From the article:
"The voyage data recorder from El Faro was retrieved late Monday from the ocean floor, 10 months after the U.S.-flagged cargo ship sank, federal authorities said.

Investigators are hoping the recorder, which records GPS data and communications between crew members, will give them insight into the final hours of the doomed ship before it went down during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015, killing all 33 of the ship's crew."

It will be interesting to see what insight they glean from the recorder.
