Re: Dorian attacks GALAWA II in Freeport, Bahamas

Well, that's some freaky crap - Bradford Marine just sent me photos and the boat looks unscathed except the stack pack is partially shredded. They are low quality but mast is pointing up, nothing is driven into the hulls, and the straps are still in place. Given the photos Galawa if you haven't heard from them yet I think you will be ok. Massive thank you to the guys at Bradford Marine for getting back to me and with that I'm going to go get drunk.

If you were here, I'd buy you enough drinks to get drunk! That is great news! As a fellow FP owner, I was hoping for good news for Palarran!

Congrats!

Dorian attacks GALAWA II in Freeport, Bahamas

I had hoped or thought you would be OK barring just bad luck.
It looked to me that you missed the worst part of the storm.
I’m glad you still have a boat.
However I feel sorry for the Gentleman who posted about his boat in Marsh Harbor boat yard, he had just let his Insurence lapse as the boat was being sold, then he got hit.

Glad to hear your boat made it through! What a nerve-wracking experience for you. The news from there is so awful...

Re: Dorian attacks GALAWA II in Freeport, Bahamas

Here is how Brafford Marina in Freeport dodged the worst of Dorian :

This is an NHC update on Dorian
"NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL052019
600 AM EDT Mon Sep 02 2019
...................
- Wind Gusts to 200 mph
- Storm Surge 18 to 23 feet (7 metres) above normal tide levels with higher destructive waves

SUMMARY OF 600 AM EDT...1000 UTC...INFORMATION
----------------------------------------------
LOCATION...26.7N 78.2W
ABOUT 35 MI...50 KM ENE OF FREEPORT GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND
ABOUT 120 MI...190 KM E OF WEST PALM BEACH FLORIDA
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...165 MPH...270 KM/H[/FONT]"

The important information is the position of the eye : 35 miles North East of Freeport Monday 2, at 10:00 UTC

Here is a satellite composite animation video showing clearly the course of Dorian, arriving and pounding east and central Grand Bahama, and then suddenly turning North instead of proceeding to Freeport

Here is the NYT link that you wanted to post: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...map-track.html

Here is a better zoomed in view from Windy depicting what you described above.

https://www.windy.com/-Hurricane-tra...0,9,i:pressure

- I switched to the Outdoor Maps layer for clarity
- Also you can hover over the track points to see the date and wind speed

And here is the overall track.

All that and the huge rock pile they built across the channel and the oil storage silos behind us. Essentially our boats were tucked into a little pocket that was high enough to avoid the surge.

Congratulations. I hope the reality of its condition is as good as, or at least close to what the photos suggest.
