Crab and Crab Pots

So I went out for a sail today in Monterey area. Tons of crab pots which although a bit of pain to navigate I just head for deep water and they disappear after the 50 fathom mark.

Long story short on the way in an aggressive recreational fisherman came up alongside ranting that I stole his crab pots and crab. Very aggressive, yelling shouting accusatory etc. Tried to talk to him but no doing. He motored off yelling he was gonna call the authorites. I let it go and when slipped he nor any officials were around. But my question is:

What does one do to protect oneself if an altercation occurs. Should I radio the CG or Harbor to let them know I'm being harrassed by an A-hole or just let it go like I did today?

You handled that very well. It would be nice in the future if you would keep your phone handy and take pictures of the nuts. Wouldn't hurt to have their registration on a photo incase something happens, and I enjoy seeing pictures of people being nuts.

Good plan. My camera/phone was down below. I was rattled by his behavior and it wasn't until after he sped away I realized this was a resident from Crazytown. Next time I think I will snap a couple pics as you say.

It might make him mad, but I am willing to let you take that risk.

Ha!!!

Guy was such an amateur. The seals chowed his catch. All the experienced guys know how to reel in the pots and secure the catch. But apparently according to Bart Simpson aboard the crispy crabber the sailboats are the real thiefs.

If you can't snap a picture or if you think it might antagonize him further, try to get a description of the boat and the registration number. The marine patrol can use this if you need to file a report (I'm assuming you were in state waters). Likely, if he is a nutcase, they have received other reports about this person...

When I remember to take the camera aboard (and inserted the memory card), I keep it on the map table adjacent to the helm, ready for immediate use. Lots of interesting things to photograph in addition to nut cases.

Taking a photo is sometimes a "two-man" job. (Note photographer near the stern.)
